| Actually there are THREE different universities in Brisbane so 'near uni' covers virtually all the CBD, westside & southside. How much are you prepared to spend ?? Its possible to buy a house within 20k of the Brisbane GPO for $300,000, but definitely not in a 'nice' area and nowhere I'd live. On the other hand if you can spend $1,000,000 then you'll have a choice of a dozen decent suburbs near either UQ, QUT or GU. |

hey everybody
I am planning on studying abroad in Australia, i have been looking more in the Queensland region, but i am looking for a city, with a university, that has the best combination of rainforests/forests nearby, beaches, nightlife, and decent sized city. I have been told the GU campus in Gold Coast is a nice place for all those. Any suggestions or ideas for me? |

The actual university might be OK but the Gold Coast generally is the pits, with more criminals, scumbags & other lowlife undesirables per square metre than anywhere else on the planet. Very few Australian tourists go anywhere near that den of iniquity because of the rip-off accommodation costs, more druggie syringes on the beaches than sand, regular drive-by shootings, drunk out of their tiny mind partygoers & police brutality. |

yeah well, so did us locals until it got over-developed & the lowlife moved in. Used to be a major destination for asian tourists once but the crime drove them away years ago. Surfers Paradise after dark is totally infested with drunks looking for a fight & typically brutal Queensland porkers happy to smash a few heads in. In daytime you run the gauntlet of hundreds of scumbags jumping out of doorways attempting to flog genuine counterfeit watches or handbags or some other crap. Plenty of shops though, especially if you want to buy a million identical t-shirts or chinese made koalas. On top of that we have the annual schoolie invasion with every single one making a concerted attempt to kill off every remaining grey cell they have left, technicolour yawns everywhere, all garden beds turned into bunks for those not offered accommodation by the fuzz when the drunk tank is full. The word 'sleazy' was invented just for the Gold Coast. There is stuff-all sun on the beach anyway (none whatever after midday) because of all the highrise ghettoes. Not that anyone with half a clue would go near the beach because of the number of syringes. |

| Brisbane is OK, traditionally the most livable city in OZ although the politicians are doing their level best to kill that concept, weather is thought by the untold thousands of invaders to be the best in the world except for between December & March when its arguably the worst. Public transport is fair but the roads are the most congested on the planet. Three universities to choose from, all of which are highly respected & well serviced by buses but don't even dream of trying to drive there & parking is something else again. A heap of beaches & rainforests are within half day drive but getting back is a major exercise because half a million drivers have exactly the same idea and the roads simply aren't up to the job. Other cities aren't much different, just more crowds & similar congestion. Basically the country is overpopulated and with totally inadequate infrastructure. Water is a major problem & we can't grow enough food for the existing 22 million but the powers that be want to cram 35 million in by mid century. Politicians at all levels are committed to the stupid 'economic growth' paradigm and as such are attempting to destroy everything that made Australia a nice place to live. I'll be moving to Tasmania within a year because thats the only state controlled by rabidly anti-development greenies. Anything to get away from the 'development at any cost' culture on the mainland. Come see the country by all means before its totally stuffed. |

I'm relocating there within a year but then I don't need to work. My object is getting away from cities, pollution & so called 'developers'. Tasmania has stuff-all industry, government is fanatically green, total population is only 500,000 & most of the state is either world heritage forest or national park. More rainfall than the rest of Australia & heavy snow in the central highlands, some claim it even snows in summer but I've yet to experience that myself. No organized snow skiing though, eco-tourism is the go in Tasmania. Not exactly suitable for anyone who loves night life, beaches or crowds. |

| Brisbane is a reasonable choice if you don't intend staying here long term. I've been here for over 30 years but I much preferred the pre-Expo88 Brisbane. It used to be a relaively quiet peaceful city but now every man, his dog, budgerigar and canary wants to live here. The stupid politicians all encourage growth because its supposedly good for economic growth or some such crap, but standard of living has nosedived & cost of living has gone into orbit. We didn't have towel-heads or many other undesirable lowlife scum before, but now the vermin are everywhere. At least Brisbane is still a relatively safe place providing you take normal precautions. Daytime is OK almost anywhere but nights can be scarey in the wrong places. Viet-cong gangs, chinese gangs, lebanese gangs, islander gangs, all sorts of miscellaneous scumbag gangs come out to play when it gets dark & even 'good' suburbs can be a dangerous place to walk after the sun goes down. The three universities provide virtually every academic specialty on the planet & attract some of the best professors anywhere. I enjoyed the time I spent doing a couple of degrees even though I didn't have occasion to use them directly. |

What about Stanage, big crabs over there,
Have a look at the realestate prices there $300K to $500K for a block of land, see a house there for $700K -- Rich miners do that to a fishing village |

I have an unusual way of 'fishing' that means I invariably come home with exactly what I wanted. You see where I live there are thses places called 'fish shops' |
