Cairns is hot and wet and is pretty much a QLD tourist town. Not a bad place to visit but personally I wouldn't live there.
The fortunes of cairns ebbs and flows with the tourist dollar, but as a chippy you might not be too bad off.
Townsville has a much broader industrial based and doesn't suffer as much as cairns in the 'bad' times.

Airlie Beach, especially if you own a boat, we have a month there every year if we can, although the last year it was down to 2 weeks due to work commitments.
You have the islands on your doorstep, 2 airports within easy access. A top spot. |
