age.johns It`s a couple of years now since my stint as Queensland Master Builders Association Chairman but I can find no evidence of the law being changed in essence re this matter.
To opperate as a sub contractor in Queensland, among other requirements you must.
1. be the holder of a currant BSA sub contractor`s licence.
2. be working under a signed contract whereby you are paid the contract price for the stated result. (not hourly rate)
3. state your currant public liability and accident insurance number
This issue is very basic stuff and very commonly known in the industry. The QMBA have been looking after tradesmen as well as builders for a few years now, and I`d recomend your emailing them for currant info.
good luck. |

| milf, you`ve your own problems without me adding to them. However, we have a person / family making a life changing decision here and I think it`s important that they get the right information. More important in fact than your ego, or mine. |

I let my license lapse in 2000 so I'm a bit behind the times as well. Has anybody thought about if age.johns@btinternet.com' s qualifications are recognized here. Not wanting to be a party spoiler but if John wants to become a subcontractor here he had better get started on his paper work as he will have to attend TAFE and sit for exams etc.
If you want to subcontract to the likes of G. J. Gardner you will get told what you will be paid, then it's up to your ability if you make money or not, so I would suggest to work on a wage and get your entitlements first up. There's no real money in housing for the principal contractor unless you mass produce so he's not about to pay out more than he has to.
As Aussie says, 1, 2, 3, are essential
M/f/i/life has given good advise that should start you off on the right path.
-----------
My advise??? = Find a builder who will pay you a wage + benefits or an hourly rate. A wage + benefits gives you about $24 an hour + overtime after 38hrs + sick pay + holiday pay + long service + super which equates to about $35 an hour. If you do an hourly rate, that is all you will get, nothing else. |

| If they are UK qualifications more than likely they are. However he will still need to apply to have then recognised. Recommend you look at the BSA website as suggested and work out what qualifications you will need for licences too if planning to work for yourself and commence enquiries regarding skill recognition. More than likely you will need to undertake some sort of assessment thru a TAFE (Technical and Further Education) College to determine whether your qualifications map across in entirety. There are well established processes for this for migrants. |

No one is going to worry about your trade qualifications too much, the fact that you`re a qualified tradesman that is. They`ll mainly be worried about weather you can do the job or not.
The Sub Contractor`s licence is another issue & is administered by the BSA. The Queensland Master Builders Association QMBA used to have programmes to help tradesmen get their subbie licence. |

| Did any of you see the Ten 5 oclock news tonight? as they were stating that the people who own homes in low lying flood prone property are going to be issued with a letter, regarding insurance on their homes, as some home will become uninsurable or expect very high cost insurance. So don't buy in a low lying area and make sure you have a look at flood maps before buying a home. |

that was my point re qualifications - all very well to say you have the skills and someone will pay you
the reality is you need to go throuh due process to gain a visa and and some employers will only pay based on qualifications
you really need to sort the issue of getting your trade papers recognised here as a matter of priority |

My friend moved from the UK to NSW and was assured his plumbing qualifications would be acceptable here.
In the event they were not and he had a choice, 6 months at TAFE full time, or 18 months at TAFE part time.
He took the part time option as he had a family to feed and worked for a licensed plumber for the 18 months. |
