Toowoomba: Antonio opposes fluoride move
http://www.thechronicle.com.au/story/2009/01/19/an tonio-opposes-fluoride-move/
DEPUTY Mayor Paul Antonio today plans to make a "strong move" against the State Government forcing Toowoomba residents to drink fluoride.
Cr Antonio, council's water services committee chairman, said he was not against fluoridated water as he gave fluoride tablets to his children and praised its benefits.
However, he believed it should not be forced on residents.
"My personal view is that there is a better way of delivering fluoride. Give people the option of fluoride tablets."
Fluoridated water has been flowing into the taps of almost 80% of south-east Queensland households for three weeks, but it has not yet reached the Garden City.
Cr Antonio said council needed to act quickly.
"I will make a strong move to make sure we get the government to have another look at it.
"We think we can provide water fluoridation in a better way to people who want it. We think it is a matter of choice."
The Water Fluoridation Act 2008 was passed in March last year and states that fluoride must be added to Toowoomba's water supply by December.
A report into the implementation issues specific to the city's water supply system will be discussed at today's committee meeting.
Cr Antonio said he would take the case to the State Government. "We hope they will listen to reason," he said.

Toowoomba: Ratepayers face big fluoridation bill
By Lacey Burley
http://www.thechronicle.com.au/story/2009/01/20/ra tepayers-face-big-fluoridation-bill/
TOOWOOMBA region ratepayers will shell out hundreds of thousands of dollars to operate 20 water fluoridation plants if council loses its appeal for an exemption.
The State Government's compulsory water fluoridation legislation dictates that fluoride must be flowing through Toowoomba residents' taps by December.
The technical and operational issues specific to the city's complex water supply were discussed at yesterday's council committee meeting.
While the State Government will pay for the estimated $4.6 million capital costs of building the plants, the operational and maintenance costs will be left for ratepayers.
Toowoomba Regional Council's water operations manager Alan Kleinschmidt yesterday told councillors there was a risk that Garden City residents would not even receive the correct dose of fluoride.
"The majority of Toowoomba residents will receive drinking water containing less than the mandated fluoride concentration, due to the blending of Mt Kynoch water and bore water in the distribution and reticulation system," Mr Kleinschmidt said.
Deputy Mayor Paul Antonio (water services committee chairman) yesterday voiced his concerns.
"This matter is a classic example where a government has decided that one boot fits everyone. But it doesn't fit Toowoomba," he said.
"What we need to do is give the people who want fluoride the opportunity to have fluoride. I think we can achieve that.
"There is a much simpler method (fluoride tablets) rather than attempt to put it in a complex water system." |

Mr Kleinschmidt, who is a member of the Queensland Water Fluoridation Group, recommended that council apply for an exemption from the requirement to operate a water fluoridation plant at Mt Kynoch.
Council accepted the recommendation. Mayor Peter Taylor hoped the Government would listen to their case.
"Whether you are in favour or against fluoridation on a compulsory basis, there are some really significant technical operational issues to comply with the legislation," he said. |

Barinda belt water fluoride contaminated
Statesman News Service
(http://www.thestatesman. net/page.news.php?clid=10 &theme=&usrsess=1&id=2409 81)
MALDA, Jan. 21: Workers of the United Nations Children Fund (Unicef) have detected fluoride contamination of ground water at Pakuahat and other areas of Bamongola block areas recently. The presence of fluoride was found to be above the permissible limit in drinking water sources.
After examining the collected water samples which when tested were found to be fluoride contaminated, the Unicef officials informed the Public Health Engineering department in Malda for 'cross examination' and urged them to take care of that area.
The PHE officials collected some water samples from different areas of Pakuahat in Bamongola block, Barind belt, and found presence of fluoride above the permissible limit in drinking water source.
Yesterday, the PHE officials, the executive engineers Mr Swapan Maitra and Mr Debasish Banerjee, met the sabhadhipati of Malda Zilla Parishad (MZP) Mrs Sabina Yeasmin to inform her of the matter and expressed their concern over the issue.
The PHE officials also urged the sabhadhipati to instruct each gram panchayat to appoint contractual workers to collect water samples from various drinking waters sources for laboratory tests.
"We would be exposed to health hazards because of the fluoride contamination in Barind belt. We have already detected fluoride contamination in drinking water sources following the report of the Unicef. Collection of water samples is now imperative to determine the extent of contamination in other areas soo that proper measures can be taken," said Mr Swapan Maitra, the executive engineer, PHE (ar$enic division).
"Three laboratories set up by the NGOs with the financial assistance from the government have been lying idle due to lack of workers for collection of sample of waters from all 146-gram panchayat areas in this district," Mr Maitra sai ... |

"We have got the information, from the PHE, about fluoride contamination in drinking water in Barind Belt. We have already asked the panchayats to appoint one contractual worker to each gram panchayat for collection of water samples," said Mrs Sabina Yeasmin, sabhadhipati of MZP.
The chief medical officer of health, Dr Srikanta Roy said: "I didn't have information about the report of fluoride contamination in Malda. Neither the PHE nor the MZP has informed us about the impending menace. We will have to take necessary measures if fluoride contamination in drinking water is found above the permissible limit."
"Contamination of groundwater by fluoride causes 'irrepairable' damage to plant and human organs. It also affects tooth enamel," Dr Roy said. |

QUEENSLANDERS FOR SAFE WATER (AIR AND FOOD) Inc
NEWS Feb 18th 2009
Dear Members and supporters
RALLY - It was a good Rally last week at Parliament House, with about 200 people attending, according to the one sentence in the Courier Mail that they gave us - as usual for very pro-fluoride Courier Mail. The banners and posters were eye-catching and the mood very positive that we can make a difference. Donations were also collected for the Victorian Bush fire tragedy with $624.50 passed on via the Commonwealth Bank.
Many thanks to the Rally speakers, they were all really great. We especially thank the following -
MP Dorothy Pratt, Member for Nanango, who spoke of freedom of choice, the $200,000 that was given to the Qld Dental Assn by the Qld Health Minister to promote fluoridation and collect signatures on a petition (Dorothy stated the govt considers this a mandate) and how the volume of emails that had been sent early in 2008 opposing fluoridation, caused major problems with the government computers, ending up with having the emails blocked from reaching the MPs.
Dr John Ryan, a medical Dr (with an alphabet of qualifications after his name), who spoke on the harm that fluoridation can cause, the evidence of this that has been given to the Bligh govt and how this has been ignored.
Dr Heather Way, a Cancer Researcher for 20 years who has specialised in molecular physiology and is the spokesperson for the worldwide body "Cancer Prevention Coalition" who spoke on association with fluoridation and cancer.
Brian McDermott from the Peoples Class Action Trust, who spoke on the first stages of an intended class action on water fluoridation and recycled water. |

Theo Tholen, who chose to come and live in Australia for freedom after being a Japanese Prisoner of War in WW 2, who spoke on Freedom of Choice. Theo helped end fluoridation on the Gold Coast 30 years ago (as did our wonderful MC Colin) and now at the age of 79 is taking up the fight again.
CAIRNS MEETING THURSDAY NIGHT 19th Feb 7pm (Cairns RSL club) - for those concerned about forced fluoridation in the far north, there is to be a public meeting protesting forced fluoridation on Thursday night 19th Feb, 7pm start, at the Cairns RSL. The FNQ branch of Queenslanders Against Water Fluoridation plan to campaign until fluoridation is banned in Queensland (just as fluoridation has been banned in the vast majority of countries in the world.)
On the 11th December 2008, Cr. Di Forsyth presented a motion to the Cairns Regional Council calling on the Queensland Premier to stop the mandation of water fluoridation in the Cairns region. This was seconded by Cr. Linda Cooper and carried by the Council and sent to the government. Cairns Council is continuing to resist forced fluoridation without consultation. |

REDLANDS ACTIVITIES. Redlands is slated to be fluoridated in late 2009 (Redlands get their water from the Leslie Harrison dam and from Stradbroke Island, not from Mr Crosby )
A wonderful gent Bill Snoddy from Cleveland, 71 years young, is leading the charge for FREEDOM OF CHOICE in Redlands, free fluoride tablets for those who want to consume fluoride and fluoride free water for those who don't. Bill has made up sandwich boards and stands in the business areas of Cleveland collecting Petition signatures to go to Redlands Council.
Bill reports that he just stands there and people come up to him and sign. Bill is doing a great job, has some keen helpers but would like more. If anyone near Cleveland could help Bill, please phone him on 07 382 12348
PETITIONS - ONGOING: There have now been about 8000 signatures presented to the government in the last few months with various petitions. These are just the first installments, we intend to keep on collecting and presenting. The Queenslanders For Safe Water Fluoride Petition (paper) can be printed from the website www.qawf.org (please read the supporting documents that are on website)

STATE ELECTION ANNOUNCEMENT IMMINENT, As many of those at the Rally last week, or at the Public meeting in West End in November would know, as a vehicle to get the message out that fluoride harms people and that recycled water should be used by Industry, I have signaled that I intend to run as an Independent candidate in South Brisbane, Anna Bligh's electorate. As those who know me well, I will do anything I can to stop fluoride harming people. I have already been offered assistance by some wonderful people but as it is a very difficult job I would appreciate any assistance in any form with delivering flyers, Poll booth assistance etc. Please contact me on email vote1@merilynhaines.org or phone 0403029077 if you can offer help. We know of intending candidates in other areas who are also campaigning for safe water and freedom from forced fluoridation.
Many thanks to those who attended the Rally, we appreciate in these economic times, it is very difficult to do, getting time off work on a week day and with travel costs, parking costs etc.
Best wishes

Subject: Latest fluoride news... world-wide fluoride petition to WHO
Hello all
1) A New Zealand group has emailed us this petition site to pass on.
FLUORIDATION PETITION TO WHO
Sign the worldwide petition to the World Health Organisation to stop water fluoridation. http://www.petitiononline.com/4001k If you're not convinced about the virtues of removing water fluoridation, see the 5 minute video links below, and also the 30 minute DVD.
2) Also, Jaya Lewis has made this video of presentation to Peta Kaye-Croft. Subject: youtube extended version Jaya meets Peta Croft
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGf_xemjXv4 We need more people to put the pollies on the spot when they are out electioneering and come right out with the question: "What do you know about the science and health effects of fluoridation? What do you know about bio-accumulation of drugs and chemicals that escape the filtration stages in recycled sewage?" Then film their responses and post on You-Tube. Show them up for their lazy lack of research. "I'll pass it on" is not good enough! They have already made a monumental decision which can harm people. They should have known all about the health effects and what they were proposing to put in the drinking water BEFORE they voted to do it. Once a local GC politician said to me last year in his office (wish I had a camera at the time): "Gee you people know a lot about fluoride. I'm just a mere politician." I think that about sums it all up. |

3) Every person that has ever written a letter of protest into the Premier's Office about fluoridation or recycled sewage will have or will be getting another 'form letter' to justify their position on water. Same letter, just a different name typed in the top. It's the same old same old with nothing new... and ignores all the issues people have raised individually. So I thought it might be appropriate if we all sent back a 'form letter' in kind to show up the idiocy of such form letters. I have asked Merilyn to draft one up and will send a copy when ready. When all else fails - try PARODY.
4) We got an email from Doug Cross of www.ukcaf.org in the UK... Apparently Anna Bligh's personally signed guarantee has made international headlines. Have a look at their website. Love it!
Cheers, Sandy

Bligh puts house on the line for fluoride
By Andrew Wight
http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/news/queensland/bl igh-puts-house-on-the-line-for-fluoride/2009/02/12 /1234028183061.html
Copy of the following statement signed by Anna Bligh on October 15, 2008, published with this article:
I, Anna Bligh, as the instigator of forced
fluoridation in Queensland, give my personal
guarantee that water fluoridation causes no adverse
health effects, and in the event that it does, I will
accept full liability and will provide financial
compensation.
Anna Bligh has signed a personal guarantee that could cost the Premier her personal assets in a court batttle if people become sick from water flouridation, a Brisbane lawyer said.
This week, Ms Bligh confirmed she had signed a legal document in which she accepts full personal liability for flouridation and promises to provide financial compensation in the event that it causes adverse health affects.
Flouride was introduced into the state's water supply in December. At the time, Health Minister Stephen Robertson was presented with two petitions totalling 6000 signatures against the move, which will see a final fluoride concentration of 0.6 parts per million.
The document, which Ms Bligh signed on October 15 at a community meeting, was first published in the Hinterland Voice independent newspaper. |

"The Premier signed the document as a demonstration of her comittment to fluoridation," the Premier's spokeswoman said.
"She did not make this decision lightly and stands by it."
But the promise could provide a loophole for anti-flouridation activists to take legal action over the roll-out of fluoride.
Mark O'Connor, a compensation specialist and partner at Brisbane law firm Bennett & Philp, said state laws prevent residents from taking any action against water authorities.
However, he said the Premier's pledge means she could be liable as a private citizen, although it would be difficult to establish a case against her.
"You'd have to provide medical evidence the condition has been caused by consumption of fluoridated water and not another factor," Mr O'Connor explained.
He said anyone bringing a case against Ms Bligh would have to show they had changed their behaviour on the basis of the promise.
"It's an unsual case. I've never seen this done before," he said.
"It would appear she is giving a personal guarantee, rather than a guarantee on behalf of the Government.
"Any claim would therefore be against Ms Bligh's own assets.
"I doubt she would put her assets at risk, unless she was sure that fluoride wouldn't cause disease."
At an anti-fluoridation rally on Tuesday, Queenslanders Against Water Fluoridation spokeswoman Jeanie Ryan said the group was still calling on Ms Bligh to end fluoridation because of its health effects. |

An article published in the respected medical journal Lancet said fluoride can cause neurotoxicity in laboratory animals, but hasn't yet been proven to be toxic to humans.
Studies in rural communities in China have found high fluoride concentrations in well water may cause skeletal abnormalities and affect intelligence.
Australian Dental Association Queensland branch president, Rockhampton dentist Greg Moore, said there could be a 20-40 per cent reduction in tooth decay as a result of fluoridated water. |

American Diabetes Association was sent a "Formal Notice of Failure to Warn and Responsibility to Amend Incorrect Public Statements."
On January 22, 2009, Dan Stockin of The Lillie Center, put the American Diabetes Association on notice with this letter at http://fluoridealert.org/stockin.diabetes.1-22-09. pdf on behalf of the millions of people with diabetes and the millions more with pre-diabetes. According to Dan,
At The Lillie Center we feel it is necessary to communicate to organizations such as the American Diabetes Association that they have a legal and moral responsibility to actively, openly tell the story about fluoride's harm to diabetics. The Association saying that it has no position for or against fluoridation does not, in our view, excuse it from taking steps to tell diabetics that the National Research Council has designated diabetics as a "susceptible subpopulation" that is particularly vulnerable to harm from ingested fluorides. This designation was made without regard to whether the water contains 1 part-per-million of fluoride or a higher amount.
The American Diabetes Association mission statement is to "improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes." We encourage everyone who reads The Lillie Center's letter to communicate to the Association's officers and Board of Directors that the Association has a duty to tell diabetics to avoid fluoridated drinking water.
