Certain areas in the world have naturally occuring flouride in their water. The lack of tooth decay in these areas is how the benefits of fluoride was discovered.
Flouride save millions of people the pain and discomfort of tooth decay as well as millions of dollars in medical costs. |

Even though it's true that some areas in the world have naturally occurring fluoride in their water supply.
What most do not realise that this Fluoride is the 'Naturally' occurring Calcium Fluoride. Not the 'Man Made' poison Sodium Fluoride. This Calcium Fluoride, thought harder to absorb, is more beneficial to teeth and bone than Sodium Fluoride, which has been shown to destroy teeth & bone.
Remember, teeth and bone are mainly composed of Calcium.
To say that "Fluoride save millions of people the pain and discomfort of tooth decay as well as millions of dollars in medical costs" is just wrong, if not bordering on lies (no offence intended ausgal951753).
Sydney has Fluoridated water, but they are going through a 'Dental Crisis' of huge proportions, Daily Telegraph 29th JUNE, 2007.
TOOTHACHE REVEALED: 200,000 on NSW dental waiting list,
"More than 45,000 are children living with tooth
decay and oral disease so severe it could turn life threatening." http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,2204 9,21985112-5006009,00.html
When it comes to any reduction in dental caries, it is always attributed to fluoride, even though there are certain to be more factors. Decay rates worldwide were in "Decline" before fluoridation or the introduction of fluoridated toothpaste. |

| It now makes me wonder, Does Sodium Fluoride in toothpaste actually help to accelerate tooth decay? Or even cause tooth decay? |

The poison is Sodium Fluoride (or Sodium Monofluorophosphate).
A man made poison derived mainly from the production phosphate fertilizers, and is also be sourced as by-product from the Aluminium smelting industries! |

Kidney Foundation Admits: Kidney Patients Should be Notified of Potential Risk from Fluorides and Fluoridated Drinking Water
Ellijay, GA: June 3, 2008 - A new position paper from the National Kidney Foundation concludes that individuals with chronic kidney disease should be notified of the potential risk from exposure to fluorides. The document acknowledges gaping holes in research concerning kidney impacts from fluorides, lending new ammunition to the growing numbers of cities, health professionals, water agencies, and citizens who question industry and government assertions that water fluoridation has been proven safe.
The statement formally cancels NKF's previous position paper on water fluoridation and recommends that kidney patients be notified of the risks via the organization's web site.
The revised fluoride statement from the National Kidney Foundation can be viewed at: http://www.kidney.org/atoz/pdf/Fluoride_Intake_in_ CKD.pdf and the attorney's letter sent to NKF that initiated NKF's re-look at fluoridation can be found at: http://www.fluoridealert.org/NKF_letter01.pdf. |

Giant Water Group Warned Not to Remove or Destroy Evidence for Water Fluoridation Injury Legal Actions
Ellijay, GA: June 9, 2008 - The largest association of water professionals in the world has been notified not to destroy, remove, or tamper with documents or video recordings in its possession that may be used in legal actions on behalf of persons injured by drinking fluoridated water.
Robert Reeves, an attorney whose work helped force FDA to concede potential harm from mercury in dental fillings, sent a fluoride evidence preservation letter to the Denver-based 60,000-member American Water Works Association. The letter listed AWWA's headquarters office, its regional section offices, and national and regional officers personally as "potentially responsible parties" that may be the subject of legal actions by kidney patients and others harmed by ingesting fluorides.
The development comes on the heels of last week's dramatic news that the National Kidney Foundation has admitted that chronic kidney disease patients "should be notified of the potential risk" from ingesting fluorides and fluoridated water |

Kathleen Thiessen, PhD, one of the members of a National Research Council panel that issued a 500-page report on fluorides in 2006, says, "The NRC report indicated that kidney patients, diabetics, infants, and other groups are susceptible population groups. I am also personally concerned that black and other minority Americans are disproportionately harmed by fluoride, and I believe there is a potential risk of thyroid damage for overexposed Americans in general."
In a January 2008 Scientific American article about fluorides, toxicologist John Doull, the chairman of the NRC panel, admitted, "The thyroid changes do worry me."
Reeves' letter demonstrates that attorneys across the country are becoming educated about fluoride, a substance acknowledged to rival a r senic and lead in toxicity. The letter also zeroes in on AWWA's slogan that it is "The Authoritative Resource on Safe Water." Reeves points out that AWWA doesn't claim to be the authoritative resource on "pure or compliant" water, but on "safe" water, putting the organization and its directors in a position of "top tier accountability and responsibility" to disseminate even the bad news about fluoride. |

"Looks like AWWA has painted a made-for-plaintiff-attorn eys bulls-eye on themselves," observes Daniel Stockin of The Lillie Center, Inc., a Georgia-based public health training firm that is working to end water fluoridation.
AWWA chose not to include scientists opposing fluoridation in a web-cast about fluoridation in 2006.
In AWWA's written response to Reeves, the organization wrote, "AWWA looks to the medical and dental communities, the U.S. EPA, the Centers for Disease Control, and other... organizations for their information and research on medical and dental health."
"Well, which is it?" Stockin questions. "Either AWWA is 'The Authoritative Resource on Safe Water' or it isn't," he states. "AWWA apparently ignored the rather obvious conflicts of interest of dental and health organizations that gave glowing reports on the safety of fluorides. If AWWA doesn't quickly distance itself from the old-school idea that fluoride is safe even for sensitive populations, it will probably result in AWWA member water districts being forced to name the headquarters or regional staff or offices of AWWA as third party defendants when they're sued by kidney patients and other groups."
A growing number of cities have recently rejected water fluoridation, including the Canadian city of Quebec and Juneau, the capital of Alaska.

Towns question fluoride use
Some oppose the chemical's presence in water supply
By Tim Jones | Tribune correspondent
3:32 PM CDT, June 23, 2008
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-The great American assault on tooth decay began here 63 years ago, earning Grand Rapids a special place in the annals of dental history: the first city in the world to fluoridate its public water system.
So it is more than a little head-scratching that fluoride, the chemical widely credited with dramatically cutting cavities and promoting oral hygiene, is having its scientific credentials questioned in the city that literally swallowed it first.
The belated questioning of fluoride in the most unlikely of places stems partly from unsettled questions-some new, some old-about possible links to cancer and thyroid and kidney problems if too much fluoride is ingested. But the push here mirrors a spreading nationwide awareness and re-examination of the health impact of a wide variety of chemicals added to food, health-care products and water, as well as the use of pesticides.
Unusual findings
Local and state governments around the nation are taking a second - and in some cases a first - look at chemical practices and their potential impact. A county in Utah has stopped encouraging people to flush unused prescription drugs down the toilet because they might contaminate the water system. That action was taken after a report from the U.S. Geological Survey found chemicals from prescription drugs in streams and rivers.
A Tribune examination of Chicago's drinking water this year found traces of pharmaceuticals and personal-care products.
In California, several communities are cracking down on aerial pesticide spraying because of its potential impact on humans and animals. Experts predict that in-depth examinations of chemicals formerly considered benign will become more frequent. |

"I think this pattern has been growing because there is better environmental health research that draws connections between low levels of chemical exposure and changes in our bodies," said Dr. Howard Hu, chairman of environmental health sciences at the University of Michigan.
"As the research has become more sophisticated, it shows that environmental toxicants can do other things beyond just kill you-they can stunt your growth, change behavior and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease," Hu said.
'On my radar screen'
Fluoride fights stretch back more than a half-century. Recent studies, though, suggest a possible link to thyroid trouble and problems for people on dialysis. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention maintains that water fluoridation is a safe and cost-effective way to prevent tooth decay, but some scientists say questions about the long-term impact cannot be dismissed.
Recent studies, while not conclusive, convinced Corky Overmyer, the director of environmental sustainability for Grand Rapids, that a review was needed to study fluoride's impact on the 11 communities served by the city's water system.
"This has been on my radar screen for a while," said Overmyer, who several years ago led the effort to remove chlorine from the city's water. Overmyer insists he has drawn no conclusions about the safety of fluoride. |

Grand Rapids commemorates the 1945 fluoridation with a 30-foot sculpture in the heart of downtown, and the questioning of fluoride has stirred controversy. Dentists have doubted or condemned the effort, and the Grand Rapids Press counseled caution in an editorial.
Grand Rapids, long known as a furniture-making city, is working to reinvent itself as a center of medical research. The timing of the fluoride examination is, at best, awkward because some of the most prominent groups in the medical establishment-the American Dental Association, the American Medical Association and the CDC-have endorsed fluoride.
"They tend to look at little bits of information that are taken out of context," Dr. Howard Pollick, a dentist and chief spokesman for the ADA, said of fluoride opponents.
Overmyer said he is taking heat.
"I had no idea [fluoride] was that sensitive an issue," he said, noting he has "teeth marks" in his backside from his dentist and the city's mayor, who declined to return phone calls to discuss fluoride.
About two-thirds of Americans, including those in Chicago and most major metropolitan areas, are served by fluoridated water. Resistance to fluoride usually is localized, with battles occurring in small towns. In May, voters in two Massachusetts towns overwhelmingly rejected efforts to fluoridate the water. |

The Internet has effectively re-energized the former ragtag group of activists by making new information-valid or not-instantly available.
And the re-examination by Grand Rapids, the mother of fluoride, has provided an unanticipated boost for opponents.
"If Grand Rapids falls, that could be the beginning of the end of fluoride," said Paul Connett, a retired chemistry professor and director of the Fluoride Action Network, which advocates against fluoridation.
There is strong political and medical resistance to reversing the fluoride policy. Dr. Tim Gietzen, who has practiced dentistry in Grand Rapids for 30 years, said he can tell which of his patients grew up with fluoridated water just by looking in their mouths.
Gietzen said fluoride should remain in the water system "unless someone is causing problems."
That's the question to be pursued by Overmyer, who said, "I'm just trying to be honest and open, and I've become a lightning rod."

Fluoridation status of some countries
Despite dental pressure, 99% of western continental Europe has rejected, banned, or stopped fluoridation due to environmental, health, legal, or ethical concerns
Only about 5% of the world population is fluoridated and more than 50% of these people live in North America. The Dan1sh Minister of Environment recommended against fluoridation in 1977 because "no adequate studies had been carried out on its long-term effects on human organ systems other than teeth and because not enough studies had been done on the effects of fluoride discharges on freshwater ecosystems."
"In 1978, the West German Association of Gas & Water Experts rejected fluoridation for legal reasons and because 'the so-called optimal fluoride concentration of 1 mg per L is close to the dose at which long-term damage [to the human body] is to be expected.' "

Fluorine (Fluorides)
Nutritionl Almanac 3rd ed., Lavon J. Dunne
Description
FLUORINE is an essential trace mineral that is present in minute amounts in nearly every human tissue but is found primarily in the skeleton and teeth. Fluorine is found primarily in the skeleton and teeth. fluorine occurs in the body in compounds called fluorides. There are two types of fluorides: sodium fluoride is added to drinking water and is not the same as calcium fluoride [essential cellsalt], which is found in nature.
Fluorine inhibits the activities of other important enzymes and appears to be especially antagonistic toward brain tissues.
Fluoridated water supplies are by far the most common source of this mineral, although this form (sodium fluoride) may be toxic. Toxic levels occur when the content of fluorine in drinking water exceeds 2 parts per million. Calcium is an antidote for fluoride poisoning. Other rich sources of fluorine include seafoods, cheese, meat and tea. The fluorine content in plant foods varies according to environmental conditions such as type of soil, intensity of prevailing winds, and use of fertilisers and sprays that contain fluorine. |

Largest double-blind study in the world shows no correlation
http://www.trunkerton.fsnet.co.uk/fluoride_fantasi es.htm (dead link)
A computer analysis of the data from the largest dental survey ever done - of nearly 40,000 school children - by the National Institutes of Dental Research revealed no correlation between tooth decay and fluoridation. In fact, many of the non-fluoridated cities had better tooth decay rates than fluoridated cities. The city with the lowest rate of tooth decay was not fluoridated. Of the three with the highest rate of decay, two were partially fluoridated.
The Missouri State Bureau of Dental Health "had conducted a survey of more than 6,500 lifelong resident second- and sixth-grade children in various parts of Missouri and found that overall.. 'there were no significant differences between children drinking optimally fluoridated water and children drinking suboptimally fluoridated water."

New Insights on Fluoride and the Brain | July 9, 2008
By Paul Connett, PhD
Executive Director
Fluoride Action Network
While dentists in the US continue to treat fluoride as if it only affects one tissue in the body (the teeth), researchers around the world continue to study fluoride's effects on other areas in the body. Of particular concern is a growing number of studies suggesting that fluoride can interfere with the brain, particularly the developing brain of the fetus, infant, and toddler.
In 2006, the US National Research Council (NRC) provided a much-needed wake up call with an excellent summary of the available literature on fluoride. According to the NRC, "it is apparent that fluorides have the ability to interfere with the functions of the brain."
In its review, the NRC examined the studies showing an association between fluoride and reduced IQ in children and concluded that "the consistency of the results appears significant enough to warrant additional research on the effects of fluoride on intelligence." Since the NRC review was released, 4 additional studies on fluoride and IQ have been published -- from Mexico, Iran, India, and China. |

A Wealth of "New" Data
In addition, an investigation last year by Fluoride Action Network revealed that there are many important studies on fluoride and the brain which the NRC was unable to review because they have only been available in Chinese. To help get these studies in the hands of western scientists and government regulators, FAN paid to have them translated and has worked to get them published in an English-language journal.
We are extremely happy to announce, therefore, that 12 of these translations have just been published in the journal Fluoride (with more translations expected to be published in the coming months) -- marking the first time these studies (with one exception) have ever seen the light of day in an English-language journal.
The studies published this week - available online at http://www.fluorideresearch.org -- provide a wealth of additional data confirming fluoride's ability to damage brain development. As noted in an introduction by Dr. Albert W. Burgstahler, Editor of Fluoride, the studies "are of great importance worldwide for a fuller understanding of how fluoride can affect neurological development, function, and performance."
For example, a 1996 study by researchers at Guiyang Medical College (Yu 1996) details how fluoride exposure among pregnant mothers can disrupt the synthesis of neurotransmitters and receptors in the brain cells of the fetus. Such effects could lead to long-lasting defects in brain function after birth. (Click here to read this study)
Another study details how infants born to mothers with a history of high fluoride exposure exhibit differences in neuro-behavioral function shortly after birth, including delayed reaction to visual and auditory stimulus (Li 2004). According to the authors: "The present observations indicate that fluoride, as a toxic material to nerve development, can have an adverse impact on the neurobehavioral development of neonates." (Click here to read this study) |

Other studies include five additional human studies showing a correlation between elevated fluoride intake and reduced intelligence in children (Li 2003; Hong 2001; Guo 1991; Chen 1991; Qin 1990), two animal studies finding that fluoride produces "considerable deterioration" in the learning and memory abilities of mice (Sun 2000; Zhang 1999); along with a study of fluoride-exposed workers finding a "cause-and-effect relationship between occupational fluoride exposure and neurobehavioral function", including "deficits in attention" and "auditory retention" (Guo 2001).
And it doesn't stop here. FAN is now working on getting an additional 7 Chinese studies published for the first time in English-language journals by the end of the year. These additional studies include two studies showing that fluoride can pass the placenta and damage the brain of the fetus, and 5 more studies finding a reduction in IQ among children exposed to excess fluoride. |

New Review of Fluoride/IQ Studies
In addition to the studies published this week, I am happy to announce that a review co-authored by Michael Connett of FAN, was presented over the weekend at the conference of the International Association of Dental Research (IADR). The poster presentation, which Michael co-wrote with Dr. Hardy Limeback from the University of Toronto, examines the findings from all existing fluoride/IQ studies conducted worldwide, including all of the IQ studies accessed via FAN's extensive investigation last year (see abstract below). In all, the review identified 20 studies which have investigated the link between fluoride and IQ. Of these 20 studies, 18 found that high fluoride exposure was significantly correlated with reduced IQ. While there are some limitations and inconsistencies with this data, the fact that 18 of 20 studies found a correlation between fluoride and reduced IQ should raise a huge red flag about the purported safety of ingested fluorides.
At the very least, we hope the presentation will stimulate much greater attention to this issue among the pro-fluoride dental researchers who attended the conference.
Fortunately, there have been indications - following the NRC report -- that scientists in the US are beginning to take notice of the fluoride/IQ connection. Earlier this year, a panel of prominent child health experts issued a consensus statement on chemicals that may cause "neurodevelopmental disorders." Based on one of the fluoride/IQ studies, as well as fluoride's potential to impair thyroid function, the panel included fluoride as a chemical that may cause neurodevelopmental harm. Imagine, however, what the panel's conclusion would have been if they had considered the 17 other studies showing the same result! |

Meanwhile, I can't help thinking about the "Got Teeth? Get Fluoride" slogan that many pro-fluoridation campaigners are using these days. Based on the evidence, the more fitting slogan would seem to be: "Got a Brain? Avoid Fluoride." |
