Moving to Mackay Reply to this message
We'll be moving to Mackay in September. We have a 7 year old boy (8 in oct) and would appreciate any advice anyone might have with regards to schools. We're from Sydney originally, but have been living overseas for the last 6 years.

Re:Moving to Mackay Reply to this message
There is an accommodation crisis in Mackay. Rents are on around $350 per week or higher and there are long waiting lists for rentals. You won't just rock up and find a place.
I've never heard anything dreadful about any of the schools. Which school, would depend on which area you are going to be living. 7-8 year olds are grade 3 in Queensland.

Re:Moving to Mackay Reply to this message
As nessa says, make sure you have your accomodation sorted out first. Our public schools are a bit over crowded but there are plenty of private schools to choose from. Emanual or St Mary's are two of the better ones for primary schooling, some schools do just primary then others do just high school. St Patricks is probably the best for grades 11 & 12.

Are you moving to Mackay because your partner is involved in the mining industry?

Roslindah

If you are living in the city the private schools are very good also the state schools are good also. if you want to live about 10k from the city at Walkerston which has everything you need and no hold up to the city regarding work and traffic, the schools are good also in this area. North Mackay can be a headache regarding traffic if you partner is a Dr he will need to go to the hospitals on that side the Mater Private is just over the Ron Camm bridge, the Base Hospital near the city. It depends on what you want in the area if you are renting or buying that will decide which school you choose.

Re:Moving to Mackay Reply to this message
Hi ,

We have just come across your post re moving to Mackay. My husband is also a Dr and is on the brink of signing into a contract with the Mater Hospital there.

How have you found Mackay to be?
We have a child aged four and so will be looking for decent areas with decent schools!

Any help/info on how you have found Mackay to be (warts and all) would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Michelle

Re:Moving to Mackay Reply to this message
My uncle and his fiancee moved up there last September. They moved back down to NSW in December because they were horrified at how awful and rude the locals were.

Re:Moving to Mackay Reply to this message
Cantget...that goes both ways. We get a lot of Southerners move up with some kind of superiority complex..."Oh darling...we only drink recycled water from glass bottles in the real citys"....
I really love the ones from Brisbane with the attitude especially when we tell them how many of us are from Brisbane and that it sucks.
Mind you, some of the service people in the big town of Mackay need....re educating.

Yer Yummy cold as...Mackay might get 10 ish - out here we can get down to 2 below.

Re:Moving to Mackay Reply to this message
First of all, I moved to Mky 15 years ago and the people are totally rude I'd even go as far as to say vile.
The people that treat others like dirt are not only those that own and/or run shops. The chain grocery outlets do more damage to your pocket book than necessary too.
Mky is not a good place but other surrounding areas are much better. If your looking for a good life try another town. Mky people are too stuck up and snobby. Secondly I was considered different (still an outcast because I hadnt come from the area) so beware of that too, even though I had been in Mky for nearly 15 years the treatment was the same very poor, I have moved away and am much happier now. Besides Mky people and businesses blame the mining industry on the lack of skilled or adequate people but its not true. Its all in who you know and what you can do for them attitude.
Mining has been around for ages and it has been beneficial and most that are on the dole dont want work because there are plenty of jobs for those that are.
I have found many places of employment but many neglect to pay wages properly if at all, and no one gives a rats *** about helping to get your proper wages in that town either. No matter what government agencies you go to they always seem to neglect the little guy. And others in government offices that I've called upon couldnt care less.
As per the house prices that was due to the greed of the agents they all took it upon themselves to hike up rental and home prices dont let anyone fool you there started in the mining communities because the agents became aware of the extra monies the mining companies gave their workers for rent assistance. And after all it wasnt only Mky that got hurt there but the smaller places got hit harder and so the little guy again get hard with cost of living prices.
Yes I do sound a bit off Mky but I am so much happier elsewhere. By the way my family live there now and they too have become rude as the rest and part of that nonsen ...

Re:Moving to Mackay Reply to this message
Hey are the generalisations flying around this thread something shocking or is it just me? hahaha.

Now house prices haven't gone up due to some big evil government or estate agent conspiracy. It's pretty simple. Not enough houses = high rent and high houses prices. The average home owner in Mackay is the one asking for those high prices, cause people pay them! And who doesn't want the best price for their house.

As for a skilled workforce. There is an obvious lack of a skilled anyone in Mackay because people can't get houses and the cost of living is so high. Sometimes wages do not reflect this high cost of living. Where i work my boss has been advertising for 6 months of health professionals with no luck.

I'll admit, I'm one of those outsiders invading Mackay from interstate. My partner came for the good mining money and we'll probably head off back home in a few years. Its called being young and wanting to live debt free. Lets face it Mackays economy is benefiting from us being here, even if the locals arent.

I've noticed a little hostility from various situations in and around Mackay, but i forgive it because i understand these people are most likely locals, who's once sleepy country town has been completely overrun by people like me. And then again on the other hand i've found some people to be lovely. Thats life ... some people suck, some don't. You get that anywhere not just Mackay.

We're the reason houses prices have gone stupid. So their children, and grand children will never be able to get into the housing market. And if they do they'll be in debt for the rest of their lives.

I'd be Pi**ed off too! lol

Muswellbrook ... you won't get a place in Mackay. You have to go on a waiting list just to be able to put in an application whic will most likely get knocked back.

Not wishing to offend anyone : because_im_uncool, but it doesn't seem to sink in.
#1 rule - Make sure you have somewhere to live before you even think about moving to Mackay.
#2 rule - DO NOT rock up and expect to get a bed even in a motel while you find somewhere to live.

#3 rule - Read rules 1 & 2 and take them as being gospel. I know it's hard for people to grasp that in a city of 90K + people there is nowhere to live but trust me, there are very few beds available.
