C'mon Chuckanoo and all your mates, don't stop now! Please keep writing! These woefully unscientific and semi-literate diatribes have entertained me all year. If the debate about flouride(sic) has run its course, perhaps you could turn to fake moon landings, alien abductions and the flat earth theory? Or there's always JFK being shot from the grassy knoll. And have you heard that Barack Obama is actually a Muslim? :-)

Dental crisis looming in state, experts say

By Scott Davis

(http://www.lansingstatej ournal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/ article?AID=2009311240001 )

Note from Fluoride Action Network: The state of Michigan fluoridates 90.9% of public drinking water.

Jacqui Day hasn't seen a dentist for a checkup for more than a year.

And she's bracing herself for the dull, throbbing pain ahead.

One of 400,000 Michigan adults who lost Medicaid dental coverage with state budget cuts in July, the 60-year-old Lansing woman remembers what happened the last time Michigan eliminated the benefit in 2003.

Because Day couldn't afford dental care, a tooth infection set in, causing complications that resulted in her being hospitalized for days in a critical care unit.

"I almost died," said Day, who uses a wheelchair because of rheumatoid arthritis. "I'm afraid that people will wind up in emergency rooms (with the new budget cuts) and it's going to cost a lot more money."

Mid-Michigan dental professionals are bracing for increased demand at clinics that serve the uninsured. One clinic is already seeing more cases of acute dental problems, such as severe tooth decay or infection, as low-income people forgo routine cleanings.

On Oct. 7, an elderly developmentally disabled woman was hospitalized in Alpena after she said her condition was complicated by a dental infection that went untreated due to loss of the Medicaid benefit. She later died.

"We are extremely concerned," said Dr. Jaeson Fournier, a deputy health officer who oversees adult dental services at the Ingham County Health Department. "People are coming to see us more when they are in crisis. We're becoming more of an urgent care center."

Serving 2,193

The health department has one of the few remaining clinics in mid-Michigan that offers preventive cleaning and tooth fillings to uninsured low-income residents, charging them discounted fees based on income. In the last fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, the department provided dental treatment to 2,193 adults.

Medicaid still covers emergency procedures such as tooth extraction for low-income adults. Since July, the county health department has used part of a $1.3 million federal stimulus grant to cover routine procedures. Children from low-income families continue to receive full dental coverage under Medicaid.

To address a $2.8 billion shortfall, state lawmakers decided to continue the Medicaid cut into the fiscal budget that began Oct. 1 - about $5 million. But advocates say the cut means the state is losing out on $16million in federal funds and will face higher Medicaid costs as more low-income people with acute dental needs end up in hospital emergency rooms.

Trips To ER Rise

After the state cut dental coverage in 2003, health professionals say, emergency room visits rose by more than 10 percent until the state restored Medicaid coverage in 2005.

"The same thing is going to happen this time," said Dr. William Wright, a Jackson orthodontist and president of the Michigan Dental Association, which represents dental professionals. "Who is to say how much they are going to save once they get the bills from the emergency room? The emergency visits will increase soon."

'Going To See A Mess'

Dr. Barry Saltman, founder of Care Free Medical and Dental Clinic in Lansing, which serves uninsured people, said he didn't expect the number of emergency room visits to rise dramatically for another 18 months. Saltman said it will take that long for lack of dental care to result in acute problems such as tooth abscesses.

"Then we're going to see a mess," he said.

Advocates have been asking state lawmakers to reinstate the Medicaid benefit this fiscal year. In October, a class-action lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids seeking restoration.

Making Due

But there will be much pressure to continue the cut even into next fiscal year: Gov. Jennifer Granholm is asking her department heads to slash their budgets by 20 for the next fiscal year because of a projected $1.4 billion shortfall.

Even when the Medicaid dental benefit was in place, advocates say it was often difficult for low-income persons to get treatment. Many dentists will not accept Medicaid patients because of low reimbursement rates.

Meanwhile, low-income residents such as 61-year-old Barbara Kocsis said she will make due the best she can.

"I've been doing it all along. It cleans my teeth," said Kocsis, chewing her gum. "There are so many people out there who need (help). I don't know what else to do."

Geelong: Protesters boycott bills

By Peter Begg

(http://fluoridealert.org /re/australia.11-21-09.pd f)

ANTI-fluoride campaigners claim more people have joined in their latest protest and are refusing to pay the water volume component of their Barwon Water bills as a form of protest.

Barwon Freedom from Fluoride (http://www.baff.org.au/) held a meeting in Geelong West on Wednesday night to discuss the latest tactic in the long battle against fluoride.

Group spokesman David McRae said yesterday over 50 people attended the meeting and gave support to the individual citizens who were now refusing to pay the water volume component of their water bills to protest against enforced fluoridation.

"Many people expressed that they may soon join the water bill protest," Mr McRae said.

"People are saying they do not want to pay for water that has been deliberately contaminated with a high level poison.

"About 10 people present at the meeting have withheld their payments since last June or July.

"Some have been harassed by Barwon Water's legal firm Mendelsons, but have firmly told the debt collectors to back off as 'this is a legitimate political protest'."

Barwon Water's general manager customers and communication Luisa Munoz said yesterday the authority followed a formal process for non-payment of bills as outlined in its Customer Charter.

"As a last resort, Barwon Water may take legal action and may restrict supply," she said.

"Regarding alleged harassment, Barwon Water and its representatives follow a structured and respectful process. Barwon Water has not received any complaints of harassment.

Boyne Smelter claims fluoride, dust cut

By Amy Glass

(http://www.gladstoneobse rver.com.au/story/2009/11 /12/smelter-claims-fluori de-dust-cut/)

BOYNE Smelters Limited claimed last night it was spending millions to reduce its dust and fluoride emissions into the community.

Over 30 people gathered in Tannum Sands yesterday to discuss the newly released Boyne Smelters air emissions study, which was initiated in part after a fire at the smelter in 2007.

Attendees questioned smelter representatives on a range of environmental concerns and fears, including whether the smelter could prevent similar incidents occurring again.

Smelter general manager Brian Cooper said he was sure they would be prevented in the future.

Management from the company also acknowledged that reducing dust, fluoride and benzo(a)pyrene were the biggest issues facing the smelter.

Health, safety and environment officer Allan Milne said the study had found the smelter was "far too dusty - we need to work on reducing our dust".

Modelling had also suggested the smelter had potential for elevated levels of fluoride past the site's boundary, he said.

However nearby vegetation showed no adverse effects from fluoride and vegetation was more sensitive than humans, he added.

Mr Cooper said the company was rebuilding its carbon bake furnace which would reduce emissions of benzo(a)pyrene.

Two more transfer stations were under construction to reduce dust spillage and 12 new cranes would be introduced, also to reduce dust spillage.

The smelter is spending $685 million on improving dust and fluoride emissions, and $30 million on the carbon bake furnace rebuild.

The two new transfer stations will cost $11 million.

Boyne Smelters Limited is the largest aluminium smelter in Australia and produced 558,000 tonnes of aluminium in 2008. The smelter employs 1200 staff and contractors.

Balranald: NSW town votes against fluoride

By SARAH O'CONNOR

(http://mildura.yourguide .com.au/news/local/news/g eneral/nsw-town-votes-aga inst-fluoride/1678991.asp x?src=rss)

A RECENT public poll of Balranald residents has found 89 per cent are against the fluoridation of the town's water.

More than 12 months ago, the New South Wales Department of Health proposed that Balranald's water be fluoridated.

Fluoride has been hailed by some as a way to ensure the dental health of the community, and condemned by others as a poisonous substance not to be consumed.

In the recent poll, a total of 414 residents voted on whether they want Balranald's water fluoridated, with 370 voting against and 44 voting for the proposal.

Balranald Shire Council general manager Chris Littlemore said NSW Health held an information session when the issue first arose, but only 25 to 30 residents attended.

"why doesn't the government give out free fluoride tablets to those who want them? My children are 10 and 12 and have great teeth with no fillings, which I take credit for as they didn't have ANY lollies until they were pre-school age, and they still don't have soft drinks"
which i believe is the way to go.
and YEs i was one of those that was plied with lollies as a child.
and have hardly any teeth in my mouth these days. but then i'm pretty old but i believe if i didn't get flouride from my water, to save my teeth i would have had a lot less.
And probably your right flouride really isn't that good for ya, god knows they are putting chemicals into every known part of our lives, probably why so many are dying of cancer then they have the cheek to ask for donations to seek out a cure to stop our children for dying .
"hells bells" stop Plying us with chemicals at every turn Might help.
Okay its back to victoria to drink me flourided water (ugh)
