Advice Needed - Moving to Queensland Reply to this message
Hi all, my family and I are planning on relocating from WA to QLD in September this year. We have recently been over and driven down the coast from Cairns to Gladstone. I would really appreciate some advice on where the best place would be to move, things we would need are:
1. Employment for my partner, Electrician by trade, currently working as a Poly Welder contracting out to a mine, willing to do anything, capable of doing almost anything, very hard, smart, reliable worker.
2. Rural/ Semi Rural - Tree Change - wanting to buy acreage, minimum 3 acres, max 30 - to keep horses.
3. A good place to raise children, good schools, clubs etc.
4. I am a fan of the well treed areas, not a fan of sugar cane land like Mackay.
5. Not looking to move somewhere too humid.
6. Access to shops/ facilities etc within 30mins to an hour.
7. Access to good fishing for my partner who is MAD on it!
8. Will be moving from a very friendly small town so would like to move somewhere friendly and inviting - we are a young family, need to be somewhere with more or better access to more facilities/ things to do.
We are planning to settle for a long period of time so any help would be very much appreciated! Thank you!

We all want to know where that town is. If such a place existed we would all be there, then it wouldn't be a small town.

There's lots of small towns with good fishing, but no work. Hubby might get work in the city, but no room for horses. Everyone, everywhere wants a job too.

Sunshine Coast Hinterland sounds just the spot. Depends on your budget as to where that might be. Acreage properties are pretty common on the outskirts of most metro areas of the coast.

Re:Advice Needed - Moving to Queensland Reply to this message
Yes I know that happened in Gladstone, it happened where I am from too... its happened all over the place however it is not a reason to give up! And humidity, the place I am living at now is on par with Cairns so I know about humidity hence the reason I said I would like it to be not too humid, I realise that it is still a little humid further south however nothing on what I am used to. Thank you anyway.

Did you call into Bowen Jen----- known as the climate capital of Australia. Plenty of work, not yet to expensive to get a rural block close to town and great fishing and crabing.

General cost of living [groceries etc] is a bit expensive but many drive the 1/2 hour to Airlie Beach where they have the major stores

Sunny Coast is not the place to just lob into on spec - have jobs lined up before you come. Theres a well worn path of peeps arriving and then leaving months later broke. Fact is there is no big industry and a higher than average unemployment rate. Traveston Dam will bring jobs but not for a couple of years yet.

If it were me I'd still give Gladstone a go - big industry and lots of jobs either in town, at Tannum or he can commute out to the mines.

We would stay where we are if we could, would make life much easier however its just not the right place anymore.. circumstances have changed, its too hot, isolated and not the place I want to bring up my children.

Bargara; Burnett Heads; Elliot Heads; Woodgate; Moore Park... all a stones throw from Bundaberg... beautiful beaches, plenty of small acreages, nowhere near as expensive as close to the mines... i would love to live there!

Re:Advice Needed - Moving to Queensland Reply to this message
Not close to the mines grumpy, Moore Park is bad for sandies.

Bowen is the best suggestion so far - that area is due for a lot more growth too.

Ah, I see. Have lived at most of those places & were nice. Bowen on the other hand has some really beautiful beaches etc. and if you want capital gain, you could do worse. - also close to a lot of mines

Re:Advice Needed - Moving to Queensland Reply to this message
I highly recommend coming over for a good long look around first and talk to the locals before committing! We didn't spend enough time in Qld before we moved, and living here is a lot different to holidaying.
only other advice is too steer clear of Mackay... lots of hoons and bogans with too much money. We arrived in Mackay last September and although the town is lovely, beaches gorgeous and weather fine, the peoples attitude here is terrible, and we are getting our kids the hell out of here as soon as we can and heading as far south as we can go. Mackay is definately not a friendly place or somewhere you would want to raise kids, but I have heard good things about Bowen.

I found Mackay people to be fine. Naturally, if you act superior and are arrogant towards people you won`t see their best side.

Everywhere has good and bad points/people. If Aussies right, you could have the same problem wherever you move to.

Re:Advice Needed - Moving to Queensland Reply to this message
Cyndale - we went through Mackay and I knew as soon as I got there that it wasnt the place for us, I am not a fan of the sugar cane etc and found the city to be too big and spread out. We have friends over in central Queensland who we are going to go and stay with while we do a bit of looking around to make sure we are happy with where we choose, so far I think we will have more of a look at Bowen, Gladstone and Bundaberg areas, its really helpful to get an insight from people who actually live over there. Thanks again :)

Re:Advice Needed - Moving to Queensland Reply to this message
I think you'll find sugar cane in most of coastal Queensland, and where theres no sugar there will be something worse (like coal mines etc.).
I'm not a huge fan of Mackay, but its not too bad, its just another place.
