Week is fatality-free

FOR the first time in nine years, Queensland has recorded a fatality-free week on the roads.

Not since March 29 to April 4 in 1999 has the state been without loss of life on the roads for an extended period.

Perhaps even more remarkably the last week has included a long weekend - notorious for road carnage.

The 2008 Queensland road toll stands at 105 which has been unchanged since last Monday night April 28, when a 29-year-old man was killed in a crash at Carindale.

Although no-one has died as a result of road crashes since then, there have been a number of serious crashes resulting in critical injuries to several people.

Yesterday afternoon at Toorbul, north of Brisbane a 37-year-old man suffered serious head injuries when his truck towing a box trailer fishtailed and rolled on Pumicestone Road.

He had to be cut from the wreckage and was airlifted to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.

Earlier yesterday, an 18-year-old woman was critically injured when the car she was travelling in crashed into the back of a utility stopped at traffic lights on Morayfield Road and William Berry Drive, Morayfield. Two other young women including the driver were also injured.

Police also attended serious injury crashes at Kumbia, Gladstone, Imbil, Dalby and Ravenshoe over the long weekend.

The road toll of 105 lives lost, is 12 fewer than at the same time last year.
