Big crocs caught in city suburbs Reply to this message
THREE large crocodiles have been caught in Darwin rivers in the past week.

A 2.7m male was trapped at Sadgroves Creek near Bayview on Friday.

And two males -- sized 2.78m and 2.09m -- were caught at Rapid Creek.

Parks and Wildlife ranger Robert Risk said male crocs were still looking for new territories.

"Males usually wander around, getting kicked out and look for a new territory and a female companion,'' he said.

"And they don't like it when the water is too rough.

"Rapid Creek is a perfect creek to hide in and there is enough food.''

While Sadgroves Creek has a permanent trap, rangers put in a trap at Rapid Creek after people spotted one of the large reptiles.

"The public saw a croc sunbaking on a bank at Rapid Creek two week ago,'' Mr Risk said.

"We put a trap in straight away.''

Mr Risk said people needed to be aware that crocodiles were part of the tropical environment.

"There are crocs in Darwin harbour,'' he said.

"People have to be wary of them andrespect them.''

Up to 19 permanent traps are set in Darwin Harbour and Shoal Bay. Mr Risk said rangers were monitoring the area all year around.

To report a croc sighting, call 0419822859 or the police.
