Mum: Send the "little *** " to jail Reply to this message
THE mother of a teenager sentenced to juvenile diversion has pleaded for police to send him to jail.

The 39-year-old businesswoman said the youth justice system was "a joke''.

"Send him to court - I'll stand up and tell them how much of a joke this is,'' she said.

Her then 16-year-old son broke into a Darwin pub last year with five friends and stole 35 cartons of alcohol.

"They had a party for a few days, but they were on security camera - *** s,'' the mother said.

Her son avoided the courts and was given juvenile diversion - which only involved a half day community service with St Vincent de Paul.

"If I went into the bar and stole that grog I'd have been in jail with the Lord Mayor,'' she said, referring to former lord mayor Peter Adamson who was jailed for stealing from Darwin City Council.

"The authorities think my son is just a naughty little boy and they can give him a slap on the wrist -- like he's really going to learn his lesson.''

In November, the woman's husband found a bag in the boy's room and suspected it had been stolen from backpackers.

"I rang the police - I thought, 'that'll fix him','' she said.

"I was hoping they were going to throw the little *** in Don Dale (Juvenile Detention Centre) for a while.''

But police decided not to charge her son because the victims had their bags returned.

"It annoys me that my taxes are being spent like this. You do the crime, you do the time. It's the only way you learn.''

Last week, police changed their mind and contacted the family to say the boy had to do another round of juvenile diversion because of the stolen backpacks.

Under the law, police must send juveniles to diversionary programs unless they commit a serious offence.

The mother, who owns a business, said juvenile diversion was not working.

The ruddy necked Mum, equipped with American slogans, but very poorly equipped with her own reasoning powers, has, nevertheless, every right to her opinion.

Psychologists and other experts, who have thought deeply and have examined statistics about the effects of jail on youth, don't agree with this woman. Surely, like 'the Mum', they have the right to their collective opinion? After all, they have a lot more than rhyming American slogans as reasons for their thinking?

What relevance has the relationship between 'the Mum' and the offender? Does Motherhood somehow make her infallible?

I know just how she feels - and agree with her.

The youth are NOT getting a clear message which will stay in their heads that this sort of behavior is NOT acceptable.

So many receive countless cautions, warnings, from victims, then from police, then from courts, then finally they do not get them and get locked up.

Deaths in custody are caused by depression setting in when they finally are surprised to find themselves locked up for a few weeks or longer.

The depression is caused because they are not getting clear messages earlier !

Also the time inside is like in a rest home for many relations, better food, more comfortable beds, relations to chat with, really should consider the first three months be solitary with intensive counselling and working out what program they should be on when they get out...

Perhaps another 3 months immediately prior to their release would be benificial. Stick in their head a bit better.
Also many deaths in custody are not deaths in custody at all. Somebody drives through a random breath testing station and floors it, then crashes 5 miles away, is deemed to be a death in custody. It really has become silly.

The first three months be solitary with intensive counseling and working out what program they should be on when they get out... then wherever possible parole them out to get on with the program.

Long parole periods ;-)

IF they fail parole program then back in for another three months in solitary to receive more intensive counseling and making it clear their chance of parole requires they keep up to date with their work for the program...

Then if they keep up and behave OK, offer them parole again...

They get to choose, be out on parole sticking to terms and conditions, if fail then back into solitary and reeducation.

This should reduce attraction of prison a bit.

For those whom such does not discourage, put them on a chain gang out in middle of nowhere, bring them back to where family can visit once a month... or just leave in solitary.
