I can't believe Adamson is going to have to do jail time. Apparently it's because he was a high profile person, a lord mayor. Big deal. NT ALP pollie Maurice Rioli stole a computer if I recall and even kept his job.
And what happens to these little s h i t s who steal peoples cars and trash them? Sweet FA. Diversionary programs. I'd much rather see them in jail than Adamson. |

Darwin's former lord mayor has lost an appeal against a jail sentence for using stolen funds to buy a refrigerator, women's underwear and a Darth Vader voice distorter.
Northern Territory Chief Justice Brian Martin found Peter Adamson was a liar, unimpressive and fraudulent.
If anything, he said the 47-year-old should go to prison for more time, not less.
Adamson now has 14 days to hand himself in at Darwin Magistrates Court.
From there he will be taken to Berrimah Prison where he will serve a seven-month sentence, suspended after two months.
Last July, the former Country Liberal Party minister was found guilty of false accounting and stealing from the council $2,758 in goods and gift vouchers.
One of the items, a refrigerator, later turned up in an East Timorese thrift store while police found women's underwear, hair dyes and the Star Wars voice distorter at Adamson's home and council office.
He was sentenced in September by a magistrate who chastised him for his weak defence and refusing to plead guilty.
But no more than 30 minutes after being taken into custody, Adamson reappeared in court - minus his shoelaces, tie and belt - and was granted bail pending an appeal against his conviction and the length of his sentence.
Justice Martin dismissed the application on Friday, saying the evidence was "singularly unimpressive and, at times, was demonstrably false and evasive".
"I am left in no doubt that the findings of the magistrate were correct," he said.
Adamson never intended to donate the fridge or gift cards and told "deliberate lies by reason of a consciousness of guilty".
"From the outset the appellant embarked upon a deliberate course of fraudulent conduct by seeking reimbursement when he intended to keep and use the refrigerator and gift cards for personal purposes," he said.
"I am left in no doubt about the guilt of the accused."
Justice Martin said the former mayor had tried to cover up his crime with a string of lie ... |

"I am left in no doubt about the guilt of the accused."
Justice Martin said the former mayor had tried to cover up his crime with a string of lies, abusing the high degree of trust placed in him as an elected official.
He said his sentence was "not only well within the range of magistrate's sentencing discretion, but were lenient".
Outside court on Friday the rattled former mayor told reporters he was "obviously very disappointed" with the decision.
He refused to answer questions on whether he still maintained his innocence and said he needed to read the court's decision before deciding on whether to appeal. |

| you got it right lone rainger, there is the rules for some and rules for others. My problem with Adamson was his "you can not touch me " attitude, the labor politician should have got gaol time as well. |

| And remember when Adamson was a minister his government were the ones that wanted to go but to the convict days of putting people in jail for very small time stealing offences, like the poor old blackfella who got done for stealing some grog from the bottle shop, and that kid that was done for stealing toys from the supermaket both of them sore prison time and its his government that done it.I reckon the DH should have been sentenced longer to wipe that s h i t eating grin off his face |

If I recall correctly, those thieves you mentioned would have been incarcerated under mandatory sentencing. You most certainly did not go inside for a first offence. |

| I believe everything has been returned or money paid back. When people steal someones car and then wreck it or burn it, they don't pay a cent back. This is where I have a problem. And actually he never robbed me, I don't pay my rates to the Darwin city council. |

| He may well be DH as you put it Anti, but I still don't think he deserves to go to jail for what he did, when everyday, people get off, seemingly without penalty, for trashing peoples homes, bashing people, or stealing their cars and wrecking them. Just doesn't seem right to me. |

In reply to "lone ranger" of the 18-02-2008 If we had a Government, Any Government, that was worth it's salt, we would have COMPULSORY SCHOOLING, (which is the way I thought it was supposed to be anyway?)and then NATIONAL SERVICE for any one that hadn't decided on a career yet, and for any dropouts there would be strictly supervised "bush (Brat) camps" to sort them out?
Whats wrong with trying those ideas for a couple of decades, the current "system" is FAILING everyone concerned and no one else has come up with a workable solution. |
