TWO bush police found themselves in a threatening situation when a mob of men picked a fight with them after having fled a random breath test.

Ntaria police - 125km west of Alice Springs - said the altercation began with a pursuit about 1am yesterday when a brown LandCruiser failed to stop at their signal.

Acting Sergeant Lewis Chown and his offsider gave chase to the car along dark stretches of the road for a distance, until it pulled over and stopped near Eight Mile Outstation.

"There was a car load of people - a few got out and scattered in the bush," he said.

But three men stayed and allegedly turned on the two policemen as they got out of their car.

While one man shone a torch into their eyes, the driver allegedly pushed Acting-Sgt Chown's offsider and the third man came at him with intent.

Acting-Sgt Chown reacted by spraying the driver and the third man with capsicum spray.

But the spray didn't take effect straight away, and the driver allegedly stooped down and armed himself with a rock.

Acting-Sgt Chown said it was a tense moment, in the middle of nowhere.

"It's pretty dark, you don't know what's going to happen," he said. "At that stage, whoever took off could have come around the back of us."

But the spray won over some seconds later and all three men fled into the scrub.

The two officers searched the area and found the driver, but weren't able to locate the other man who had also received a dose of spray.

Acting-Sgt Chown said while the incident could have had a much worse ending, they were able to rely on their training, judgment and experience to control the situation.

The driver - who was disqualified from driving for five years in 2006 - allegedly recorded a blood alcohol limit of .132 per cent.

Police also seized his car after they found it was carrying booze in a proscribed area.A magistrate remanded the man in custody, to appear in Alice Springs court today.

A BRUTAL neighbourhood clash in the Territory has sent four people to hospital with serious injuries and several more into custody.

Unconfirmed reports say the violent clash was between at least two large families early yesterday.

The three men and one woman had to be treated for head injuries and fractured arms.

Nine people were still in custody last night as a result of the fight.

The dispute escalated about 1.15am on Saltwell St in Larapinta in Alice Springs.

St John Ambulance southern region deputy operations manager Peter Monks said two ambulances were dispatched to the scene.

He said three police crews had brought the fracas under control by the time the ambulances arrived.

"We were called to the scene about 2am and we took four patients to Alice Springs Hospital," he said.

Alice Springs police said the men and women in custody were being interviewed and the cause of the clash was still under investigation.

But the town has a history of families notorious for fighting.

Two men, aged 29 and 58, were treated for head injuries and a fractured arm.

A 31-year-old man also received a fractured arm from the fight.

And a 36-year-old woman had head injuries.

Alice Springs hospital spokesman Darrel Trueman said the four people were in a stable and satisfactory condition.

"They're all still in hospital," he said last night. Police said they would release further information today.
