Chief Minister narrowly avoids being censured

The Chief Minister, Paul Henderson, has avoided being censured for neglecting the residents of Alice Springs.
The Opposition moved a censure motion against the Chief Minister for failing to provide infrastructure, control crime or improve education standards in Central Australia.
The Parliament was divided, with 12 members voting to censure the Government and the 12 Government members voting against.
The Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Lynne Walker, was forced to turn the motion down.
"Honourable members, there being 12 ayes and 12 nos, pursuant to section 27 (1) of the Northern Territory Self Government Act, as there is not a majority of votes, the question is resolved in the negative," she said.
The independent Member for Nelson, Gerry Wood, says he chose not to vote on the censure motion. |

THE Northern Territory Labor government has for the past five years diverted $2 billion earmarked for indigenous disadvantage and other key services to mainstream spending in marginal Darwin seats.
Detailed figures obtained by The Weekend Australian reveal that hundreds of millions of taxpayers' dollars provided by
the commonwealth and intended for indigenous health, homelessness, delivery of services and families have been used to service debt and bolster superannuation payments.
The figures come as the Territory government continues to defend its handling of the $672 million Strategic Indigenous Housing and Infrastructure Project, which has so far failed to result in one new house being built, despite $45m being spent in the first 15 months of the project.
The new figures, revealed in 2009 Commonwealth Grants Commission papers and raised this week by conservative indigenous politician Adam Giles, show the Territory government has consistently failed to spend its allocation of GST money from Canberra as intended.

Communities miss out on youth programs

A central Australian youth worker says some communities are being deprived of youth programs because they are not on the list of Northern Territory growth towns.
More than four years ago the NT coroner recommended a youth worker be placed in every community.
Tristan Ray from the Central Australian Youth Link-Up Service says there has been progress in some communities west of Alice Springs, but the Barkly region is being neglected.
"The communities to the east of the highway who, because they're not [on] the list of 20 selected communities, aren't entitled to youth services money, despite having significant populations and the same range of issues affecting young people that are present in the west," he said.
"So we certainly worry about those sites and we will be doing what we can to get youth services on the ground, but there isn't significant Commonwealth funding to do that."

Oh yes, we forget the Commonwealth gave the NT the money, also how this means these are still NT issues... or have they failed to spend the moneys in accordance with the Terms & Conditions and had to give it back ?
