The use of marijuana has been spreading throughout Central Australia.

A study from James Cook University has found that up to 70 per cent of people in remote Indigenous communities are using marijuana and that some are children as young as 13.

Where once petrol sniffing was widespread, now cannabis use has taken hold in many remote Aboriginal communities, with dealers seeing them as lucrative markets.

This has meant a surge in chronic health conditions like acute psychosis and depression and the already-stretched medical facilities in these communities are struggling to cope.

The use of marijuana has been spreading throughout Central Australia - from the top north through to the Aboriginal communities in South Australia's far north-west.

Alan Clough from James Cook University has researched the problem for the past 10 years in Eastern Arnhem land, and found that around 60 per cent of men and women aged between 13 and 34 years old used cannabis at least weekly - far more than the national average.

"Unfortunately the community also saw a clear link between a rise in the suicides that were happening in those places," he said.

"There's also a clear link between cannabis use and withdrawal symptoms from cannabis and violence. Often users who are stressing out will put pressure on their immediate family members for more money to purchase cannabis.

"Then there are the mental health effects for the individual that are quite diverse as well that are consistent with what we know about cannabis' effects in the rest of the world."

Health services struggle

Associate Professor Clough says the communities are struggling to treat these problems and to look after people presenting with these issues.

Oh oh, sounds like the Kukka kid is finding it a bit too hard here and has been on the blower to his mate, 'the biggest fool who ever hit the big time', for some help.

I wonder if he'll be posting again during work hours?

I like your choice of ID though. Wasn't Tonto the Lone Rangers side kick and general dogsbody? As I understand it, Tonto used to wash the Lone Ranger's clothes, while the Lone Ranger was busy servicing Tonto's squaw's.

And I see you've tricked us all by calling yourself Bob now. That'll work. Ha ha.

Drug and alcohol seizure - Alyangula

Police have apprehended four people in relation to a drug and alcohol seizure that occurred in Alyangula yesterday afternoon.

Members attended a residence on Carpenteria Circuit and conducted a search, locating numerous people inside as well as fireworks, liquor, a small amount of cannabis and approximately $10 400 worth of cash.

Three females aged 26, 23 and 21 and a 19-year-old male have been summonsed to face Alyangula Court for numerous charges, including:

Possess dangerous drug
Possess liquor in a restricted area
Possess tainted property
Possession of the fireworks

All four are to appear in court at a later date.

Senior Sergeant Lee Morgan said this was a great result.

"The sale and use of cannabis in the Groote Eylandt area is a serious issue. Hopefully this result will send a message to people involved in the distribution of cannabis on Groote Eylandt that if you are involved in dangerous drugs you will be caught.

“The long term effects of cannabis use can be devastating to individuals, families and communities. It is really important that people within the community take a strong stance against the use of all illegal drugs and continue to provide police with timely information" said Senior Sergeant Morgan.

NT traffickers hid drugs in dog poo

Two men who attempted to hide more than $317,000 worth of drugs in their car by covering it with dog poo have been sentenced to four years jail.

David Vella and Joseph Galea stuffed methamphetamine and LSD into their car's roll bar along with faeces in an attempt to deter sniffer dogs, the NT News has reported.

The two cousins were arrested outside of Alice Springs on February 13 after a random check, with the narcotics which the court heard were being smuggled from Melbourne to pay Vella's $15,000 drug debt.

Cannabis hidden in roo carcasses and undies
By Anna Henderson

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/11/24/2752 033.htm

Cannabis is being sewed inside kangaroo carcasses and hidden in women's underwear so it can be smuggled into remote Aboriginal communities, says the Northern Territory independent politician Alison Anderson.

The former Labor's Indigenous policy minister, who became an independent earlier this year, says marijuana has replaced petrol sniffing as a scourge in remote communities, with children as young as eight smoking the drug.

The Member for MacDonnell today told the Northern Territory Parliament cannabis is mostly trafficked into the communities by women who hide it in their underwear because they know male police officers are not allowed to body search them when they drive through roadblocks.

She says there are also other tricks like "picking up kangaroo roadkill on the road, emptying the kangaroo and filling the kangaroo guts up".

Ms Anderson says alcohol, which is banned in prescribed communities under the federal intervention in the Northern Territory, is also sometimes hidden in the same way.

She says a wide-ranging substance abuse inquiry is urgently needed.

"You have now got eight-year-olds on ganja in communities," she said.

"It is a huge problem and I think that what we need to do is really take the message and deal with the problem holistically rather than individually just on petrol sniffing."

She says money that is not frozen by welfare quarantining is going to marijuana dealers in remote communities.

Cannabis seizure and arrest - Katherine

A 60-year-old woman was arrested in Katherine on Wednesday afternoon after she was found to be in possession of four grams of cannabis and $5,800 in cash.

It is alleged the woman was selling cannabis around the Katherine township and that the cash was the proceeds of her sales.

A search warrant was executed on a residence at Binjari Community and a further five grams of cannabis was seized.

The woman was charged with unlawfully supplying cannabis to another, possessing cannabis in a public place, and receiving property in commission of a crime.

She was bailed to appear in the Katherine Court on December 21.

Meanwhile a 19-year-old man is to be summoned to appear in court for possession of cannabis after detectives executed another search warrant at Lockheed Road and two grams of cannabis was found.
