Indigenous students 'seek inclusion'
By Larine Statham, AAP October 30, 2009, 7:14 am

Concerns have been raised that the federal government's so-called education revolution will not meet the needs of Aboriginal students.
Northern Territory Education chief executive officer Gary Barnes wants the new national curriculum, currently being developed, to take into account the unique circumstances of Australia's indigenous population, but says that does not mean course work should be "dumbed down".
"What we don't want are dumbed down outcomes for indigenous students because proud indigenous parents want for their children what all parents want - they want their children to succeed and to be measured at the same level as every other Australian," he told AAP.
"We don't want a version of the national curriculum that is just for indigenous people.

Is not enough having Principals talk with members of the new Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) - the body tasked with developing the national curriculum, to be rolled out within the next three years.
Absolute minimum is for summaries of such discussions to be available online for all with interests to read.
Indeed much - perhaps most, correspondence and or discussions related to schools needs be classified and made to be PUBLIC READABLE online.
Only by having such discussions out in the public will the communities feel informed and involved.

I say less talk, more action.
White people get on their soap-box and talk, talk, talk think they have solved the problem and head back to their air-con office and write their reports and that's it, no follow up no results. |

Glad to see you accept that it is only white people who can get things happening, but we have known that for donkeys years.
You know Joker, I think you are a 'blow in', as we call southerners who come up here for a few years and think they know everything.
What are your credentials? How long have you been here in the NT, if you are here at all, which so far, it appears you are not.
I think you are as fake as your story about Ropes and your involvement with him. |

White people have been making things happen for years, for instance the oppression of aboriginal people and blatant discrimination. |

Blow in as you call it is a description of yourself, you blew in from pommy land.
I was born and bred in the NT but don't call myself a local, that rerm applies to white people only.
And I may not know everything but I know more than you. |

Agree getting some people to send their kids to school is a major problem.
When send them to school regularly found self being abused by head teacher when went to ask their teacher why I had found them running around community - NOT at school during the normal school day when I expected them there.
Then abused further for sending them to boarding school for mainstream education with the rubbish that were depriving them of their culture !
Later a social worker decided to help one leave home (not such a worry) and school - but failed to keep that one in school...

It is plain wrong to label people by color.
Most people will take their chance to get on the soap-box and rave on about whatever...
The benefit of having things written down is the words remain the same for everyone to read... not misquoted to suit whoever is remembering...

Comment: really irrelevant, as often we need someone who has not spent long time surrounded by and attempting to deal with the problems to see different ways through problems.
Around the world local experience becomes the conservative barrier to radical change...
Radical change is so radical it harms many who must survive it when it comes.
So true solutions usually come from both fresh ideas and local experience blended together.
The only way to achieve this is through ongoing free and open discussion of the issues !
NOT petty squabbles related to our dress sense, or our grammar ;-)

---
Comment: After 30 years of land rights and self-management the people responsible for the "oppression of aboriginal people and blatant discrimination" are one and the same.
Victims as result of own oppression...
The land is owned by the Corporations which are owned and managed by selves...
Such oppression happens when refuse to accept change has arrived and refuse to adapt to it, refuse to learn new skills, new ways to address problems...
Otherwise you expect people to give up houses, cars, shops, social security, doctors, and learning how to do and achieve things better...

With all the money supposedly spent or still available to be spent on education in the NT
Why are we NOT seeing equivalent results ?
Why are so many of our post-primary students NOT shining with their achievements with all the opportunities available to them from achieving just a basic English literacy and education ?
Article: Poorer schools outshine the rest

One of the schools punching above its weight is Richmond West Primary School in inner-city Melbourne, where the majority of students speak little or no English when they come to school. Many are refugees, and live in the adjacent Housing Commission estate.
By Year 3, about 90 per cent of students are passing minimum literacy and numeracy standards but are still below the state average. By Year 5, students at Richmond West are outshining their peers and performing well above average.
Principal Peter Lord attributes the school's success to its ability to attract and retain experienced and highly competent teachers, which is much easier in an inner-city location, and small class sizes of 20 or less.
