A SECOND federal Labor politician has called on the government to respect the wishes of traditional owners to ban alcohol in national parks.
Lingiari MHR Warren Snowdon said the law needed to be consistent for indigenous and non-indigenous people.
He said tour operators needed to negotiate directly with traditional owners for drinking permits.
"Ultimately, that is where it should be, in my view," he said.
"But ultimately I think people should appreciate that what is good for one is good for the other."
Last week Solomon MHR Damian Hale also called on his own government to respect the wishes of traditional owners.
"I would not like to see one lot of rules for one group of people and another lot rules for another group of people," he said.
These comments are putting more pressure on Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin to reject a request from the Territory Government to exempt certain camping sites from the alcohol bans.
The minister has said she would work through the issue with traditional owners and Territory Government.
Nine central Australian national parks were handed back to traditional owners in June, including Trephina Gorge, Arltunga Historical Reserve, N'Dhala Gorge, Corroboree Rock, Native Gap, Chambers Pillar, Kuyunba, Ewaninga Rock Carvings and the Dulcie Ranges.
These parks were then leased back to the Territory Government for $3 million a year.
This transaction inadvertently lumped the parks - including popular camping sites - into the intervention.
Central Land Council chief executive David Ross last week said people should be able to enjoy the parks without alcohol.
"I think if people's lives are so heavily governed by the use of alcohol, then I think those people should consider their lifestyle," he said. |

Snowden and Hale are playing political games. They know bloody well that it is one group in the NT who cannot drink responsibly, anytime, anywhere.
They know that white people have to suffer more and more restrictions on where they can drink only because another group, an illiterate group, which Snowden knows is the sole reason why he remains a pollie, cannot drink responsibly in our towns and cities.
It has been shown that not once has a tourist been arrested for an alcohol offence in these areas.
The Central Land Council has started this, not the traditional owners as they claim, only to nark white people because they can drink responsibily.
Unlike their lot who come into our towns and cities and reak havoc.
This is a reason why the land councils should be abolished, just like ATSIC was. |

And again, by Ropes;

Woo woo! Crikey, our boy's getting upse
Looks like he didn't come back refreshed and relaxed from his holidays. Suppose with such a stressful job it wouldn't take long for him to get worked up again.
Poor little man really needs to get a real job |

Is Racism a Mental Illness?
Yes
It can be a delusional symptom of psychotic disorders
Alvin F Poussaint, Professor of psychiatry
To continue perceiving extreme racism as normative and not pathologic is to lend it legitimacy. Clearly, anyone who scapegoats a whole group of people and seeks to eliminate them to resolve his or her internal conflicts meets criteria for a delusional disorder, a major psychiatric illness.
------------------------- ------------------------- -----
Racism is caused by fear
In some cases racism can generate such an enormous amount of anger that it can cause a war. The thing that causes this anger is mainly fear. Fear that the stranger will take your house, your job, your wife. You don’t know who this stranger is, and he doesn’t know you. To fight racism we have to get to know each other and learn more about each other’s cultures. We have got to share each other’s joys, but also learn that we often have the same problems and worries. |
