Indigenous political party plan resurrected
By Louisa Rebgetz
Posted 5 hours 31 minutes ago
The Central Land Council's deputy chairman, Maurie Ryan, says the current state of Northern Territory politics has inspired him to again try to launch his own Indigenous political party.
Mr Ryan has been working to get an Indigenous party up and running for more than a decade.
He says his First Nations Indigenous party will aim at ensuring money allocated for Aboriginal services actually hits the ground.
He is holding a public meeting in Darwin this weekend to try to gain the 500 signatures needed to register the party.
"We have Aboriginal people in politics now but they follow the party lines.
"This about Aboriginal people.
"There are a lot of people waiting for me to get this party registered. It's way overdue.
"I have support of other land councils, individuals in the street and people who are just want to sit down and talk.
Mr Ryan ran unsuccessfully as an independent against the Labor incumbent Warren Snowdon in the seat of Lingiari during the last federal election.
"Lingiari is named after my grandfather who went around Australia talking about modern day land rights.
"This is what created the Northern, Central ... [and] Tiwi Land Councils in the Northern Territory, named after this amazing great man." |

When Maurie previously tried to start a Ab' party he had the word 'ethnic' in the title.
Seems he has realised that the word ethnic is now on the nose.
It will be fun watching how this pans out. |

| Maurie, this is a great idea and I wish you well. I would like to know more about the platform for the party. It needs to address the issues for indigenous people, those who are proper blackfellas in the good way and not a lot of Johnny come lately people who are trying to get on the bandwagon. I admire Alison's stand and wish a few more politicians would be as honest and outspoken for the people out bush. All the best |

This is how Darren Coyne of The Guardian, the Communist Party of Australia's rag, described him, at a protest march on parliament house Canberra, 18 Feb 09.
"Meanwhile, speakers at the protest included Maurie Japarta Ryan, who described the apology last year as shallow, and questioned the validity of the Australian Constitution.
"The Constitution is invalid because we have never given away our sovereign rights," he said, before announcing he was forming a political party called the First Nations Ethnic and Multicultural Political Party."
Seems that Maurie thinks the, 'Ethnic and Multicultural' part of his new party needs to be hidden away, for a while at least.
Talk about a political opportunist. We are always hearing about race based politics but this takes the cake.
Maurie has failed to get himself elected previously and says he is still trying to get 500 signatures to register his 'new named party'. I wonder if he will try and register his party without the "Ethnic and Multicultural" bit up here, however add it in down south. |

| I dont think that was a fair comment you are here whining about aboriginals yet you do nothing but write abusive letters with the use of a fake name and you think you are solving a problem.NO you are promoting the problem to get worse. Why not move out or have the white population given your marching orders with your I AM attitude |

Jesus Rus', you've been here 5 minutes son and you think you know what it has taken me over 40 years to learn.
I've been through all this so many times here I just can't be bothered anymore explaining and educating those who just dropped in for a look. OK? |

No, you're not reading English properly son. I'm an Aussie, and so were my parents, and their parents, and their parents etc, all the way back to 1838.
And thanks to people like me, you exist. Aren't you glad about that. I'll bet you are. But don't thank me, oh no, it's the ladies you see. From the moment they saw us they wanted us. And we obliged them. So it was win win all round. |

Maurie Ryan complained in today's NT NEWS because a poll on whether people agreed with his, 'race based' party, revealed 93% did not.
This bloke, who was removed from Wave Hill stn when he was 4yrs old, claims Vincent Lingiari as his grandfather, and it seems he has been living off that ever since. |

Anderson sceptical about post-ATSIC body
Posted 2 hours 28 minutes ago
* Map: Darwin 0800
The former Northern Territory Indigenous policy minister, Alison Anderson, says a plan for a new body to represent Aboriginal people will have board members who do not really understand the problems of people in remote communities.
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner, Tom Calma, yesterday released a report calling for a new representative body with a 128-member council.
But the independent Member for MacDonnell, Alison Anderson, says she does not think anyone from remote areas will make it onto the board.
She believes it will be filled with people who are already well represented.
"These are the people that are educated enough to get themselves over to Canberra, to advise the federal minister," Ms Anderson said.
"And I think [Indigenous Affairs Minister] Jenny Macklin and [Prime Minister] Kevin Rudd should be setting up a body that represents the whole nation, and not just a little body that is not really going to work."

Ha ha, Crusty, you are just like a big girl. Running off to mummy all the time.
Did you learn your Brown Nosing when you got called up, or did you take it into the service with you?
So you are saying Alison Anderson, who was raised here, unlike the people she talks about, is wrong.
And you base this on. Lets see, sweet FA. No knowledge of Ab's up here whatsoever.
Hey! You're perfect for a role in this new body. You'll fit right in. |
