Pol hit it right on the head aye Ropes when he pointed out;
People removed from communities were rarely the troublemakers, usually has been those people who refuse to go along turning a blind eye to the corruption, the criminal, the plain disgraceful actions and inactions taken by those organisations, departments, government and the land trusts who just liked how things were going as long as kept out of the news.

Where do you think you fit in there? As one of those who instigated the removal of others? |

Some of the 'name and addresses withheld' in NT News
Name withheld — views published
Watch Name withheld — views published [G, 4:12min.] (Help):
RealPlayer hifi video RealPlayer lofi video
First screened 20 June 2005 Presented by Liz Jackson
Northern Territory voters went to bed on Saturday night with their election result already settled. The Labor government romped back in.
It was a first.
And it was off the back of a policy that targeted habitual drunkenness.
The policy was flagged early in the campaign.
"Northern Territory News
Drunk itinerants to be jailed (by whoever gets elected)
— NT News June 2, 2005"
Chief Minister Clare Martin denied that Labor's policy was racist, saying she was just responding to "a spike" in public complaints.
The letters pages of the NT News have been carrying letters like this for months.
"Not My Idea of Life Style
... Ted Egan, the loony left Administrator appointed by the loony left ALP Government ... suggests that hard working taxpayers should fork out more money to the Aborigines via hand-outs in the form of a free meal a day ... Unfortunately, Aborigines still live in the stone age. After 40,000 years, they still have not grasped the simple concept of basic personal hygiene. Why should taxpayers be held responsible for their lifestyle?
— NT News Letters page, 18 March 2005"
Now whose view is this?
Lets see who wrote the letter?
"Name and address withheld by request
— NT News Letters page, 18 March 2005"
We don't have an issue with the NT News publishing views like that, but what's it doing allowing the author to hide behind "name and address withheld"?
Why should this anonymous writer be able to air this view if they're not prepared to own it?
Well, it seems that the NT News is pretty relaxed about allowing anonymity to just about any-one who asks.

Six of the twelve letters published that day were "name and address withheld", most we should say were uncontroversial.
Sometimes the letters have just initials and the suburb.
"Long Grass invasion
They drink and fight in the parks most nights and litter, urinate in my front yard and parks where we expect our children to play in. And guess what? This is Clare Martin's electorate.
PC, Fanny Bay
— NT News Letters, 28 April 2005"
In the weeks before the election was called, the Letters Editor did announce a more responsible policy.
"UNTIL the calling of the NT election, no letters specifically dealing with NT politics will be published unless the writer is prepared to have their name and home suburb published with it.
— NT News Letters Page, May 13 2005"
But within days the paper had broken its own guidelines:
"Poor Behaviour Condoned
One of things I hate most is when foreigners come to our shores, proclaim they want to become Australians and then spit on our conventions and way of life. Of course I refer to the Minister in the NT government who reportedly refused to toast the Queen recently
— NT News Letters Page, pg 13, 31st May 2005"
Sorry but we just can't believe the author really was:
""The Lone Ranger", Bees Creek
— NT News Letters Page, pg 13, 31st May 2005"
Now it's not just Media Watch that regards over-use of anonymity as a problem.
Once an election is called it becomes an offence under the Electoral Act to publish anonymous letters that deal with election issues - they're just too open to abuse.
But two weeks into the election campaign: |

For ages Ropes has been baying like a drunken donkey about some electoral fraud which The Lone Ranger, of NT NEWS fame, had supposedly committed.
Laws were broken Ropes exclaims, and many here may have wondered why The Lone Ranger is not in jail because of it.
Well below is the total discussion about it in Media Watch in 2005.
I don't think the world stood still that day Ropes, you desperate and despicable moron. |

Media watch recognises "name and address withheld" are mostly uncontroversial....
Media professions, even the NT media, silently recognize how many informed, knowledgeable people refuse to write about things IF required was their letters to be published with their real identity.
They all to well aware of the vindictive, cowardly, behavior of some - particularly in positions of power, towards those who dare to comment outside preferred party rhetoric.
Such behavior often insidiously racist in nature, often far more dangerous than content of letters published.
Such vindictive attacks are attacks upon universal participation in our democratic process, attacks upon the basic principles of democratic process.
Their attacks cowardly as they attack the person who speaks rather than addressing the ideas represented.
Likely because the ideas, the rationale, is to close to accurate, to true, for their cowardliness to honestly address.
Yet without addressing the substance which causes the constants then the changes, the progress required, in order to have a harmonious community are not achieved.
So they prefer the chaos... the disadvantage in preference to the resolution of the disadvantages.

excuse me for a minute while i shed a few tears for the sorry excuse of a life you have
You can insult me as much as you like it means nothing to me other then I've hit the nail on the head.
So for the last 30 years all you have done is bludge of the local Aboriginal community. All your claims about caring for and respecting the Aboriginals etc is just an act. Time you trained one of the locals to do your job and moved on. Stop bludging of the people you claim to care about. About time you developed a bit of self respect Steve |

How could it possibly be that you don't understand that the majority here think you are just a pathetic apologist.
I'm not sure any more if he is an apologist. Bludging off the locals for 30 years and not training someone up, sound more like the actions of a fraud then an apologist ? |

The Electoral Act may well say that once an election is called it becomes an offence to publish anonymous letters dealing with election issues.
Changes needed for the now outdated Electoral Act ?
Those sections of the act should just be dumped, remove penalties, restrictions on speech, within the act, in order to recognize changes in communication arising from the internet and instant online publishing.
Or should they be toughened... ?
Strengthen governments fight against unacceptable opinions ?

Pol, you wrote;
****The Electoral Act may well say that once an election is called it becomes an offence to publish anonymous letters dealing with election issues.****
The letter Ropes relies on only gets up a minister in the NT government for a personal choice he made. He is foreign born, and discarded proper protocols by reportedly refusing to toast the Queen at a function in Darwin.
This was not an election issue, nothing like it. It was a personal issue about the mans integrity and suitability for office in Australia.

Only an ignoramus like Ropes would try and make something else out of it, he is just clutching at straws as usual. |

for the benefit of saturday4th who it seems does not read so good or just reads parts of posts, i will repost again
--------------
over 30 years in my community i have had a number of jobs, one which included coordinator of the local media association in which i assisted in the training of local people who later went on to pass the Broadcasting and Journalism course at Batchelor College. at present i supervise around 30 men in positions which include Civil Works, Waste Management and Parks & Gardens. my crew recently won the best working crew of the month.
i don't think this is bludging, i think YOU are bludging on your white society, but thats nothing out of the ordinary, white australians are known around as the laziest people in the world
-----------
you obviously don't know about life in an aboriginal community, you obviously don't know aboriginal people.
i applied for the position i currently hold before a review board which included aboriginal members of my community. i was given the position because the review board decided i was the best man for the job.
this is my home, the locals are my family and friends, i am a trusted and respected member of my community, if i wasn't
i would not have lasted 32 years bludging on aboriginal people.
what does your community think of you bludging on them?
the term "dole bludger" is a white term |

In other words it's what others have been saying. You have so little respect for the aboriginals that you don't want to train one sufficiently enough to do your job. Yeah they are right, you are a fraud and a racist. |

My post was not aimed at any individuals.
Question was whether changes are needed for some parts of the Electoral Act which may now be outdated to changes in communication.
IF yes, what sort of changes ?

Thanks Steve you just proven my point. You've had numerous opportunities over the past 32 years to train up locals to take over your job but have consistently failed to do so.
If you really had any respect for the locals you would be suggesting to the review board that a local should be given the position with you providing consultancy for a set period. I do this all the time when I run projects and it works. However your aim seems to be nothing other then keeping yourself in a job at the expense of a local.
So your only achievement over the past 32 years seems to be nothing more then keeping yourself in a job. Well done it must be something you are very proud of. |

This is the reason Ropable likes the permit system. Anyone who doesn't toe the line and keep their mouth shut, they're outta here.
And toeing the line means accepting the inherent violence in communities as Aboriginal business, not yours.
As long as there are white people like Ropes in communities "advising" members who should or shouldn't be allowed to remain working there, change will come slowly.
These little bwana's ingrate themselves into community politics and because they are white they are seen as all knowing. They know they will lose some of their thunder when ordinary Australians are allowed to work in these communities and come and go at will, and no doubt point out a few home truths to the locals while they are there.
This is what Ropes fears I expect. It is generally accepted that many who work in remote communities do so because they could not manage in mainstream OZ. |

its a human failing to prejudice, discriminate and vilify a race of people just because they are different. racism is born of ignorance and fear. |

The permit system has never kept me out of any community I wished to travel to. And it certainly has not kept out the drug and grog runners, (because they are all Aboriginals from the communities) which is the main claim for it's continuation.

Everyone equal? What rot. Women and children were, and are, chattels, to be used and often abused by their male owners.
