| If the toll gets to high when will the anti speed freaks start coming out and blaming the road toll on speed again. When they start kiss your 130 k speed limit goodbye. |

Seems to me Peter they have always done that.
The current policy of the opposition is that when they resume power (at the next election) they will reinstate the open speed limit on highways. |

Some more stats for last year, from NT News.
THE number of road deaths in Territory towns soared last year, an analysis of the fatality statistics shows.
Thirty-one people died on urban roads, many of them in Darwin's northern suburbs and Palmerston.
That's up from nine in 2007.
Seventy-five people were killed on NT roads in 2008 in 67 fatal crashes. Fifty-one were male and 24 female.
Rural deaths were down slightly - 44 compared with 48.
Fewer Aboriginal Territorians died than non-indigenous.
Indigenous people remained over-represented in the 2008 road toll but did not suffer the same increase in fatalities as non-Aboriginal Territorians. Thirty-five indigenous people died compared with 31 in 2007.
The non-Aboriginal road toll was 40, up from 26.
There was a smidgen of good news in the grim 2008 road toll.
The number of people who died on stretches of road where a 130km/h speed limit had been imposed went down by one last year - from seven to six.
But the fatality rate was an average of 12 for the five years leading up to the new speed limit.
The biggest contributing factor to road deaths remained alcohol and not wearing a seatbelt last year.
Grog was a factor in at least 28 deaths - 39 per cent of the road toll.
And 24 people died - 32 per cent of the toll - because they were not wearing a seat belt.
Speeding also remained a major killer on Territory roads.
Driving too fast was a factor in at least 22 deaths - 30 per cent of the road toll. |

Second death reported. Presumably an Aboriginal lady.
January 20th, 2009
FATAL: A woman died when she was hit by a car while crossing the road in Darwin last night.
A PEDESTRIAN was killed last night when she was hit by a car in the Darwin suburb of Ludmilla.
The woman is believed to have been crossing the road when she was struck by a sedan that was travelling north on Bagot Rd near the Bagot community.
The road - both inbound and outbound - was closed between Nemarluk Drive and Fitzer Drive as authorities worked at the scene.
A number of distraught family members gathered nearby, sitting on the side of the road - but it was last night not known whether anyone witnessed the crash.
Police said the woman was struck about 8.45pm and died at the scene. |

Hey Ropable, seems that you have come back just as twisted and bitter as when you left.
This is a thread on our road deaths, which I believe we all need to be very aware of. The more it is read, no matter where in OZ, it may just make someone drive that little bit more careful. Or in the case of the last death, be very alert when driving in the vicinity of Aboriginal communities, whether in Darwin or out bush. |

Steve Ropa At least Dallone has taken the time to highlight some facts and figures for everyone. He never laid claim to the figures. As for original thoughts when you find stuff in the media and then stick up on the message board do you give credit to the source or do you claim it as yours(plagerism}?
Go beat your drum in a new message group called oh poor me I have no-one to listen to me. |

Steve may not be aware ;-)
Many people follow forums - like here, who rarely post.
Some of them are still on weekly mail and slow speed dial up, or just lazy, so may not spot the articles.

As Pol pak says, some of us don't always get the daily paper so it is handy to see someone post the info on these boards. Thanks to Dalone for those posts.
Please lighten up a bit Steve. |

""in my community we are lucky to have a week old edition of any newspaper""

Oh, you poor dear, totally cut off from mainstream news for a week at a time. A week behind the Lone Ranger's NT NEWS offerings. I can understand your pain.
But wait, I have the solution. You're on the net, so just read the newspapers online. Hows that for a good idea.
Actually, you often point people to web sites which have media content. Awww, you knew all the time about news online, aye! (but why spoil a good story with the truth)
So Ropes, apart from being a week behind, sometimes, on The Lone Ranger's latest, what else in the NT NEWS do you miss, if anything? |

In many communities people are lucky to see a week old edition of any newspaper !
This is an educational disgrace, considering how little it would cost to send a hundred or so copies of the main NT papers to each community.... compared to the millions wasted in other ways.
However some communities do not want people reading....

Unfortunately it does appear that way at times.
As I understand it, prior to the educational marvel known as bilingual education, all were taught English, in English. These people are now the parents/grandparents of children being taught bilingual. Strangely enough though, they can read and write English but their children/grandchildren cannot.
I think back in those days when children were told to come to school, they went, because their parents trusted white people to be doing the right thing for their kids. These days of course that trust is absent in many places because half smart southern part Aboriginals conned the government into ""Self Determination"". Presumably because they erroneously believed that fullbloods in the NT were as sophisticated and worldly as themselves, albeit, just a little darker, and that unless they had control of all matters nothing could be achieved. Along with this naturally was spread the lie that white people were not trying to help Aboriginals at all and that unless you had some colour, how much mattered not, you had no right to decide any day to day matters relating to community life. Which resulted in an open slather policy, do whatever you want because you are empowered to do so. And that's all that matters. |

A young soldier from Robertson Barracks was killed in a car crash yesterday. The photo in the paper showed the car absolutely smashed. It was the driver who died, his mate is in RDH fighting for his life. The accident happened on Amy Johnson Ave about 6:50pm. The Holden ute smashed into an oncoming HiLux in the oncoming lane. The ute was torn in two.
2nd death this month, takes the road toll to 4 for the year. |

I have reposted here some of what departing Dr Pat Rebgetz said about the remote community at Wadeye, where he worked for 3/12 years.
~~
"I've got 25-year-old blokes who have to come in with their grandmothers because they can't speak English. They've never even been to Darwin.
"If a boy like that needs to see a specialist in Darwin, he could not negotiate his way to an appointment. He'd need an escort, like a three-year-old. This is Australia in 2008. It's bullshit."
Wadeye's school has a bilingual education program that has tended to educate children in their mother tongue before teaching English. The problem, Rebgetz says, is that when the time comes to learn English, the kids are no longer going to school. |

Fatal MVA -Darwin
A 21-year-old man has died following a single vehicle crash near Parap early this morning.
Police received a report just before 2am this morning that a Holden Barina panel van had collided with a tree on the Stuart Highway between Goyder Street and Parap Road.
The male driver was the only occupant of the vehicle and members of the NT Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene and used the Jaws of Life to remove him from the vehicle.
He was treated by St John Ambulance members but died at the scene.
Territory Duty Superintendent Jamie Chalker said it appears speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.
“Witnesses said they saw the vehicle being driven erratically outbound on the Stuart Highway,” Supt Chalker said.
“The driver appears to have lost control of the vehicle causing it to crash into a tree.
“This tragedy again highlights the dangers of drink driving. It appears the driver had been drinking before getting into his car and making what was clearly the worst decision of his life. Police urge motorists again and again not to drink and drive, but it appears the message is falling on deaf ears.
“Perhaps people have to be more proactive in taking a person’s car keys from him if you think he’s going to drive after drinking. It could just save someone’s life.”
The Stuart Highway was closed for approximately seven hours while members of the Major Crash Unit examined the scene.
The death brings the Territory Road Toll to 5 compared to 13 for the same period last year. |

| Interstate has seen liquor license holders and those serving intoxicated drivers subject to action for serving them, also being sued for damages from families of deceased and even from the injured drunk drivers ! |

Hello Pol.
Being able to take legal action against the liquor licence holders/bartenders could be a great way to encourage responsible behaviour by those people. I expect it would be a difficult thing to do though but I hope it becomes an option for those affected in the NT. The more actions we take in order to try to limit the road toll, the better I think. |
