I'm soo sick of P-Platers being labelled as dangerous, wreckless drivers.
You rarely hear on the news of some drunk idiot in his thirties doing 160km/h in a 60 zone. But you'll definately hear another exagerated story of "yet another P plater being wreckless".
In the media today there is a massive double standard between mature aged drivers and young drivers. The prime example is the vehicle restrictions for P-platers. I'm currently on my green P's so they do not apply to me, but it definately ammuses me to see the sheer stupidity of these laws. I've just read that QLD are bringing in the same restrictions seen in NSW.
Its funny(and tradgic) that since these restrictions were bought in, the P-plater fatality rate has nearly doubled. There is a very simple explination. There are now more p-platers driving standard cars as if they were performance cars. The problem is that the performance cars had better breaks and handling, and are therefore safer to drive at the speed young drivers are doing.
But and this is a BIG but. We are still focusing on the young drivers. The problem applies to all people of all ages. According to the media all P-platers are accidents waiting to happen. And i'm not picking one one type of media or the other; they are all as guilty as eachother.
For instance in the paper or the radio, following a story about a p-plater doing something wrong somewhere at some time, you'll hear the death toll for p-platers. They make it out as the all those youths that make up those numbers caused those accidents. they throw them all in together; further propagating the overall negative image that has been painted for p-platers.
And perhaps the worst thing of all is that everyone is rubbishing p-platers, but you won't see an "expert" on the tv defending the youth, or anyone at all for that matter defending us (with the exception of a few car magazines like fast fours, or auto salon).
But i guess it comes down to what makes good news; doesn' ... |

| My husband is a volunteer in our community's rescue squad and the majority of the car accidents his squad are called to are young male P platers who are either drunk or speeding (or the two combined). They think they're invincible but unfortunately they're not. |

I think lostie_fan meant that in the genereal population there are less P platers than there are fully licensed drivers...
Because P platers are in the minority they technically don't have a say... similar to Labor supporters not getting a say in how this country is run... |

Wrong. My parents (aged 43 and 44) just had to drive a cop around the corner to get their licence. It may not be an important issue to YOU, but you're obviously not a responsible P-plater who is lumped with the bad ones like the Original Poster (assumedly) is.

Regardless, bad drivers come in all races, sexes, and ages, only difference is, if we can put more restrictions on P-platers now, hopefully they will become better drivers when they get to the age of the fools who say P-platers are the ONLY bad drivers. |

yeah too bad both the major political parties in NSW are right wing facists , trying to take our rights away one by one , not to mention its just a revenue raising scheme .
I'm a 25 yr old p plater I waited till I was a little older and responsible to get mine , I think if they are going to pring in restrictyions it should at the most apply to drivers under 21 but even still it just seems like a revenue raiser look at the numbers P platers make up 18% of road users and wow low and behold 18% of NSW road toll last year was in p plate accidents in this respect we don't perform any worse or better then full license holders |

People simply don’t get it and as long as everybody keeps blaming everybody else
Thousands of people innocent or not will die on our roads for years now we are becoming a society of people who refuse to take responsibility for ourselves, they took the cane away from schools, you cant smack your children, and if they still don’t like they can divorce you. You bash someone braking into your house you’re the criminal. we are bringing our children to say do whatever you want because we cant stop you so when they climb into car they have the same attitude I can do whatever I want and then blame someone else. |

Maybe if they bought in massive fines everyone would slow down.
If you were left paying off a debt over a speeding incident Im sure you would think twice about doing it again.
Then the money accumulated from these fines could be used to reward drivers with unblemished records in the form of paying their car rego, drivers licence renewal etc |

| U are right "monzie" There are a lot of idiots on the road of all ages, some are just a bit more experienced & can sometimes get themselves out of trouble. Problem is young people are dieing on the roads. Governments get abused if they don't do anything about it and abused if they do. Young people usually realise they are not that good until they get into trouble and can't react quick enough to get out of trouble and ending in disaster. |

I say we put the oldies in the cars the under-21s are driving and see what happens.
We could also put all the middle-aged bogan ute-drivers in... ah let's just send them to Africa so they can do burn-outs to their heart's desire far away from the rest of us. |

This is an email that was sent to me and i would like to share hopefully it make anyone stop and think before you drive a car after they have been drinking
I went to a party,
And remembered what you said.
You told me not to drink, Mum
So I had a sprite instead.
I felt proud of myself,
The way you said I would,
That I didn't drink and drive,
Though some friends said I should.
I made a healthy choice,
And your advice to me was right,
The party finally ended,
And the kids drove out of sight.
I got into my car,
Sure to get home in one piece,
I never knew what was coming, Mum
Something I expected least.
Now I'm lying on the pavement,
And I hear the policeman say,
The kid that caused this wreck was drunk,
Mum, his voice seems far away.
My own blood's all around me,
As I try hard not to cry.
I can hear the paramedic say,
This girl is going to die.
I'm sure the guy had no idea,
While he was flying high,
Because he chose to drink and drive,
Now I would have to die.
So why do people do it, Mum
Knowing that it ruins lives?
And now the pain is cutting me,
Like a hundred stabbing knives.
Someone should have taught him,
That it's wrong to drink and drive.
Maybe if his parents had,
I'd still be alive.
My breath is getting shorter, Mum
I'm getting really scared.
These are my final moments,
And I'm so unprepared.
I wish that you could hold me Mum,
As I lie here and die.
I wish that I could say, "I love you, Mum!"
So I love you and good-bye.

| yes vt there are irresponsible fools on the road from my experience just as many hold full licenses as P Platers many license holders set terrible examples for younger drivers the point of this thread is that if they are going to put restrictions on Pplaters license holders should be restricted in some way too if you look at the actual number P Platers make up approx 15% of our road users and Last year the approximate number of fatalities p platers were responjsible for was approx 15%.,which means full lisence holders caused 85% of all deaths on NSW roads |

| p-platers are just learning to drive on their own and they just seem to think that nothing will go wrong. p-platers have a choice when they get behind the wheel and most just dont listen to what they have been told. the others are the ones who pay the price. the p-platers that drink-drive, use drugs talk on the phone, and just like showing off are letting the other p-platers down. i know what it is like and i have seen some accidents caused by drink driving p-platers who think they rule the road. well im all for these rule changes and all of my mates are too. p-platers need to think real hard about they futures cause it can be taken away just like that. so please dont under estimate these rules look at the whole story first before you accuse people. all p-platers need to learn this fact real fast before they lose a life or thier own. |

| The reason that there is no uproar about the person in their 30s doing 160 whilst drunk is because they have been driving so much longer and are safer than P platers doing 20 and sober. It is not comparable |

The ratio of P-platers to fully lcenced drivers involved is high due to inexperience and a sense of immortality
PARTLY
It is also due to them spending far more hours on the road in a day (and night)
My two nephews are never home
An 18 yo and his 1st car
Whats changed ? |

Yeah I was kidding. Though there is some truth there but not to that extreme that is why there is a difference between the speed limits and alchohol limits for p platers and fully licensed.
I actually think that the reason why there is a spike in p platers crashing/dying is because P platers have to stay on their ps for three years now instead of 1 year meaning that they have three times as long of "opportunity" to have a crash. (ie the crashes that they are having in their 2nd and 3rd years would have been recorded as fully licensed drivers previously but are now recorded as p plater crashes). |
