Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology
NSW

Top Priority for Immediate Broadcast
NSW SEVERE WEATHER WARNING
Flash Flooding,
For people in the
Northern Rivers, Midnorth Coast
Issued at 12:55 pm on Friday 6 November 2009

Synoptic Situation: 12:00 noon EDT Friday
A slow moving low pressure trough lies over northeast NSW with a very humid low level airmass along the north coast. An approaching upper level system is expected to deepen the trough somewhat today.

Rainfall totals of 100 to 200 mm were recorded from some locations on the Mid North Coast in the 24 hours to 9am Friday, the heaviest falls in the north. Since 9am the heavier falls have contracted a little further to the south to the Kempsey/Port Macquarie area with 70 to 80 mm reported in a couple of locations.

Rain areas are expected to continue today in the Mid North Coast district with further localised heavy falls and possible flash flooding. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to increase in the Northern Rivers district this afternoon with local flash flooding also possible.

At this stage computer model guidance suggests an easing trend in the rainfall this evening or overnight though further rain areas or scattered showers are expected along the north coast over the weekend.

A Flood Watch is current for NSW coastal rivers between the Tweed and the Hastings.

At the time of issue flood warnings were current for the Bellinger and Orara Rivers and Coffs Creek.

Emergency services advise do not enter flood water. Stay well clear of creeks, storm drains and causeways.

For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES [NSW and ACT] on telephone number 132 500.

The next warning is due to be issued by 5:00 pm Friday

This warning is also available through TV and Radio broadcasts; the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 218. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate this warning being broadcast regularly.
