Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology
NSW

Top Priority for Immediate Broadcast
NSW and ACT SEVERE WEATHER WARNING
Damaging Winds.
For people in the Alps, the ACT, the Southern Tablelands, the Central Tablelands, The South Coast, Illawarra, and Hunter.

Issued at 11:35 am on Friday 25 September 2009

Synoptic Situation: 9:00 am EST Friday
A vigorous cold front is expected to move across western New South Wales this afternoon and evening. It is expected to reach the southeast of the state overnight and reach the far northeast Saturday morning. Fresh to strong, gusty north to northwest winds will turn colder fresh to strong westerly behind the change and may reach gale force in the above districts with blizzard conditions on the Alps. Snow is expected to fall down to about 900 metres during Saturday. Dust has been reported over northwestern New South Wales, and this is likely to be transported to eastern parts during the day, so that reduced visibility due to dust may also be a feature.

Average wind speeds may reach 65 km/hr with gusts over 90 km/hr in the above districts.
Over Alpine areas blizzards can be expected, and above 1900 metres, winds may exceed 80km/hr with gusts in excess of 125km/hr possible.

Emergency services advise you to keep clear of fallen power lines, stay indoors away from windows and keep children indoors.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service recommends that people consider postponing back country travel until conditions improve.

For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES [NSW and ACT] on telephone number 132 500.

The next warning is due to be issued by 5:10 pm Friday.

This warning is also available through TV and Radio broadcasts; the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 218. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate this warning being broadcast regularly.

There are more electrical thunderstorms expected across most states in the late hours or overnight and maybe even tomorrow as well.

For emergency help in floods and storm contact the state emergency service on telephone number 1 3 2 5 0 0 or if that number is too busy you have got a backup plan on 0 0 0 emergency.
