Anyone live or has lived or visited...the Southern Highlands of NSW?

What were your thoughts or experiences of this area?

Bowral, Mittagong, Robertson, Moss Vale, Berrima, Hilltop, Burrawang, Penrose, Exeter....to name but a few towns within..

Re:Southern Highlands, NSW Reply to this message
I have some rello's down that way, and I visited them recently... Places like Moss Vale are really lovely, but obviously very clicky and exy.
Theres a nice cafe/bookshop I think its south of Mittagong on the old road, it has poplar trees along the driveway.
Oh, one other thing, it would be getting chilly down there now I reckon.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's snowing around there at the moment.

Berkelow's Bookshop..... Pathogan:)

Great place and had hassles with the council about having a coffee shop within....for such an isolated area it seemed plausible.....unsure if it all went through, haven't been out there for yonks...

Yep...Jack and Path....heavy frosts lately, no snow yet, maybe only snows here every few years but sure gets cold....have heaps of Winterfests throughout and 'Christmas In July' celebrations...very clicky and exy eh?.....just what does exy mean lol:)P

Re:Southern Highlands, NSW Reply to this message
Well they must have got permission for the cafe, because it was operating just fine, and I had a delicious chunky pie. The coffee was a bit ordinary, but a lovely setting. I'm not surprised local council gave them grief, shows up the status quo.
Exy refers to expensive, lots of beamers and lexuses getting round Mossy. (which refers to Moss Vale)

Re:Southern Highlands, NSW Reply to this message
hehe Pathogan...Moss Vale is also nicknamed Moss Vegas!

It used to be the main focus of the area due to the railway junction.....has only recently had the place restored, including I hear, the Governor General's Rooms!

Bowral however has tended to say it was the centre of the area and Mossy full of convict stock and lowlifes:)

Time changes all and so many Sydneyites are moving up here for retirement or a 'tree change' (so close to Sydney often training it to work each day) the cars are certainly increasing and the styles more upmarket...the bonus has been that many villages have been infused with new life and community participation increased again...

the down side is more traffic and expectations of city living:( (i.e. woolworths and audi and huge complexes forcing the smaller businesses out)

where do your relatives live, which village or town?

Re:Southern Highlands, NSW Reply to this message
I just realised, I think Ive been talking about the wrong town... The one I was thinking about is right next to Mittagong. Berrima is also very nice too.
Rellos at Goulburn, Mittagong, Picton, Dalton, Canberra...

A bit like the way an octopus spreads ouyt its tentacles and strangles its prey.

Re:Southern Highlands, NSW Reply to this message
Well, it could be that. Or it could be the weather and way of life...
My parents heard it was unbearably hot and full of dangerous wildlife up here, then they came and saw it for themselves... July will be the third visit since late March.

Re:Southern Highlands, NSW Reply to this message
I grew up there in the 60s & 70s.

And yes, it DOES get cold.

I can remember several good falls of snow, too.

It takes ages to get to the Valley from here.
I have to go past the Pie shop then takes another 30 minutes to KV.
