Sydney rail Reply to this message
Lots of debate about public transport in Sydney, but the powers that be could learn a lot from european rail systems. I've had the benefit of using the Belgian rail system of late and cannot understand how they can do it for the price.

Tickets are sold over the counter by real people - not simply machines.
All platforms have station guards, even the smaller stations.
No ticket collectors on the platforms, simply inspectors who walk each train checking passes and tickets on an infrequent basis.
No expensive ticket barriers to trap passenger entry and exit, simply walk on and off the station as needed.
No jackbooted guards hassling people who have the temerity to think about putting feet on seats. People simply don't do it.
Trains are generally clean and well kept, regular, on time, air conditioned and sufficient for the number of people who need them.
Trains go to almost all parts of the continent and ticketing allows single point of purchase to almost anywhere, buses included.

But the biggest thing was price. The train from Brussels airport to the central station is probably 15 to 20 kms. The train station is directly under the airport, even easier to access than Sydney airport. The trains run regularly at all times of day and night. But the best part is the price. 3 euros, less than $6, for a fast, direct and easy trip into the city. Similar trip when I flew into Sydney airport recently was almost $15. And for that I had to change trains and make 3 times as many station stops for less than half the distance. I took a cab back to the airport and door-to-door it was only $22 - with no lugging baggage to the train station, no changing trains, no lugging baggage up to departures. If I'd been travelling with a partner I'd be in front by far, not even considering the ease of cab travel.

Why is it so hard for Sydney rail to get it right?

At least they're still better than Melbourne trains. And furthermore, there isn't even a train to the airport in Melbourne!
