I believe a survey demonstrated that Coles and Woolworths upped their prices generally, so, in fact, petrol was not any cheaper.

The naming and shaming of Coles Express is no more than a political stunt to fool people that the Rudd government is doing something about the rising petrol prices. The fact is petrol prices have increased faster under Rudd than at any time in Australia's history. While I'm not a supporter of the market control the oil companies and the major supermarkets enjoy, the fuel price watchdog can only make a difference of 2 cents per litre at most. If Kevin Rudd was serious about the cost of motoring then he should look at the rip-off in road tolls that the NSW Labor government have introduced in partnership with the private tollway companies. These companies increase their tolls by well over 10% per annum. 2 cents a litre saving in petrol is absolute peanuts when compared to the $21 a day I pay in tolls to go to and from work in Sydney. Some people are paying around $40 a day (that's equivalent to about $8000 per annum before tax). The oil companies and supermarkets are an easy targets for the Federal government. OK Kevin how about looking at the Labor State governments who are taxing us out of existence.

THAKS very mutch for puting my job on the line, It's being done by all the major fuel outlets in my area, so are you going to boycot every fuel outlet or just COLES EXPRESS.
I work for COLES EXPRESS & I cop the abuse from customers about the petrol prices & now it is even worse I just hope that Petrol Commissioner Pat Walker can get me another job when this one is no longer puting food on the table or paying my mortgage, I wonder if it would possible to take out a CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT against the Petrol Commissioner for loss of income by all the people that he is potentialy puting out of work by his remarks & I also wander if there is not a personal issue here.

Yeah but with an ethanol blend.
Engine manufacturers will not give a warranty on engines if you run 10% ethanol blend.

MyBlinkyBill. Ha Ha you don't have to work for Coles Express. You can always work for another company. My family has lived in Sydney for 100 years, longer than you have been working for Coles Express. But I agree, if the Iemma government stuffs up NSW any more then I will be out of here.

Blinky, I feel for you. Trouble is, people aren't seeing all of the taxes that are thrown on fuel. I'm not sure of the exact breakdown, maybe someone can enlighten us. I reckon since we can't stop the taxes, we should try and cut our costs any way we can. But there are heaps of people who can't be helped. I put an ad on a local notice board the other day advertising 7 to 14% more km per tank of fuel and even offered info on this and a free sample, but would you believe not one person wanted info or would take the free sample. Beats me, here is a chance for a saving and it's not taken up. Maybe people wopuld rather whinge than do anything about the problem

Re:Boycott coles to lower fuel prices Reply to this message
Whats the difference between Coles and Woolwworths = the colors of their servo's Prices are the same or a cent or two different one way or the other on any given day most of the time especially in the Hills district. Yesterday a Coles at Dundas was 1.36 while every one else was 1.40 after the fuel docket discount some non discount outlets such as BP were 1.53. How much are we paying this Minister and all of his sponges, Mr Rudd there are millions of fuel ministers driving round in cars all over Australia everyday we don't need a minister taking extra taxpayers dollars we need some rebates from the government on the excise and not through the retailer lets get it back on our tax return least then we know we are getting it all pro rata to our individual spend. Mr Immea wher ethe hell is your 3c levy being spent give it up NOW or at least spend it on Roads so that we might improve our fuel efficiency instead of been bogged down in Traffic Jams even on the Motorways which we have to pay extra to use. Motorists you are voters send our governments a strong message. As for the NRMA saying all this action is a good thing do they listen to their members ?
I looked at downsizing from my Falcon to something smaller its cheaper to keep the big guzzler at 13ltrs 100 klm than to pay 30k for a small box that does 9 ltrs 10ok but hey whats new I think that we are being forced into small diesels so that the governments and the oil companies both get a pay day.
PHEW that's one load of my chest.

Re:Boycott coles to lower fuel prices Reply to this message
why is it that burma(before the disaster) was paying $1.50per gallon for fuel? thats 35 cents a litre!!!

My family in the US pays 2.90 per gallon, thats around 80 cents a litre Australian

As you can see you have a third world country paying only around 30% of of what Australians pay..thats right third world country!

You have a giant like the US paying half that of Australia!

The reason for this? refer to my first comments on this topic

Julie and Steve,

The Federal government's fuel excise is 38 cents a litre. Makes you wonder what all the Coles Express fuss is about when the government itself pockets more than 25% of the cost fuel.

Re:Boycott coles to lower fuel prices Reply to this message
Thanks for the answer justinfacts. I actually thought that the total taxes were a lot more. But as I said, I'm ignorant on the total amount but thanks for your input. I agree, the fuel docket fuss is really a storm in a tea cup compared to taxes. But let's face it, it doesn't matter if it's lab or lib, the govt is very happy having the general population believe they are helping by enquiries into competition, oil companies and anything else as long as the smoke screen hides their taxes.
Regards Steve

Re:Boycott coles to lower fuel prices Reply to this message
A basic understanding of micro-economics is helpful to understanding exactly why Coles allegedly prices higher than average. In strategic locations (eg. no Woolies servo for miles) Coles may feel it has the market in that area. The market leaders in terms of outlets and volumes may be playing off the backs of one another the raise prices overall. Personally, I find Coles very competitive in terms of their pricing and the quality of the fuel they provide. In Coles's defences, I feel I should state that my wheels perform better with Coles/Shell petrochemical products - I am willing to pay above average prices for good quality.

Micro-economics has very little to to with the price of petrol. the only interest Coles express has (or any public company has, is to MAXIMISE the return to their shareholders) Fullstop. They could not care less about anything else
