| I was heartbroken to hear that the cull went ahead. To see those poor kangaroos caught in the fenced areas was horrible and to know what their comong fate was. I honestly believe the only reason for the cull was so that building houses on that land can start and not because they were starving or a nuisance. Every time we clear land for building houses on we bulldoze straight over our wildlife. I for one loved going past that site and see all the kangaroos.People from interstate and overseas are thrilled to see our wildlie so close to the city. |

| Hi Lab, problem is that if not culled many will die of starvation, until a number remain which can sustain themselves on the limited pasture available. A bullet in the head, or similar, is far preferable to dying of starvation. In my opinion. |

The Defence Department should be ashamed of themselves for the missmanagement of this area.
The RSPCA have advised that the cull was carried out properly (as far as they observed); however, they are now in talks with the Defence Personnel to ensure that this will never happen again (we hope). |

Well said, they cause alot of destruction too, with fences etc, and eat alot of pasture meant for livestock, their numbers MUST be controlled. |

It's Defence land, not ACT Govt land. There will not be any houses built there. If there were, it would have happened by now, with urban infill |

The problem with dysfunctional ecosystem and number populations out of control is because we use aerail baiting of 1080 because of the Industry' that this has become. The fox, cat, goat and pig populations are all soaring out of control because the top land predator our dingo has been and is being exterminated without a thought to why the kangaroo numbers have increased. It is because there are no dingoes keeping everything in toe as the top modulator.
Over seas they have reintroduced the wolf ( our dingo is NOT a dog but a wolf and a different species to a dog) into yosemite where for the first time in more than 70 years Aspen trees are growing because the deer are kept in toe by the top land predator. Mexico and Finland have also learnt from this example and reintroduced the wolf with a good balance in the ecosystem.
In Australia we have Peter Garrett who voicves concern about whaling by the Japanese but is silent about exterminating our own wildlife with 1080
Alternatives to this super toxin in any parts of the country with farmers usuing Mareema dogs work fine without loss of sheep. 1080 has no antidoe, is inhumane , can take 26 hours to die in agony. Threatens all wildlife as secondary death is created from other animals and birds feeding on dead corpses that litter the landscape
Easy access over the counter in NSW make the mind boggle in this time of terrorism and our government wont let this information into mainstream media outlets because the 1080 industry is a billion dollar a year business in New Zealand and Australia. The Roo numbers is a prime example of what happens and should concern everyone as it is defolliation of our continent because of stupid politicians |

This was first posted on 6 June 2008; and here we are again with this problem; still not solved; now I am wondering how these poor animals can sustain themselves in a toxic waste area let alone increase in numbers; can anyone advise and
Have the Defence Department and the RSPCA concluded their meetings as yet?
If so what was the results? |

Consultants are conducting environmental, planning & delevopment study for the future surburb of Lawson now.
This is a topic listed for the Belconnen Community Council Forum that is having a meeting 7.30pm Tuesday the 21st April 2009 in the Community Room upstairs Belconnen Library.
Land sales is the only thing holding the Stanhopless Govt together. They have already built around lake Ginninderra as much as they can which has stuffed up an area that you used to be able to go too & not feel like you were in surburbia.
I have be kayaking on this lake for the pass 15 years & over the last 5-6 years the Stanhopless Govt has totally stuffed this area which we will never be able to get back. You used to be able to see the lake when driving around Belco but now it is boxed in like a pond.
As for that development that has been built over the last year which has taken 50% of the area along Aikman Dr which was natural grass-bushland what a eyesore. Why did they have to destroy this area, oh that's right a heap of cash & so cashed up developers can attend their fundraisers.
When you were paddling or riding around the lake after work that area was so nice to look at after working a in building all day, you could almost forget you were living in a city.
As much as I do not want this last remaining countryside in the Belconnen area built on and maybe 80% - 99% of all people in Canberra want this area left as countryside Stanhopless Govt will push it on.
Unless people start getting off there rear ends once in awhile. I'm guilty of this, have never been to a Rally or anything like that but if one is arranged to stop this area being built on you can count me in.
With the Roo matter, love seeing them there but their number's do need to be controlled to allow other native animals a chance as well. & I think a marksmen with a quick bullet is the best choice. |

| See, the thing is kanagroos bread like rabbits. It is quite possible to kill a large proportion of the population and their numbers will recover in a few years. Canberra is built on a migration route for eastern grey kangaroos so the problem will remain untill the city of Canberra is finally abandoned. This abandonmeent will also save Australian tax payers lots of money as Canberra is not economically viable and thus constitues the biggest parasite in the country, perhaps the world.... |

| Or indeed where are they migrating from? I don't know but if you contact the wildlife research unit in the ACT's department of urban services, I'm sure someone there could explain it to you. |

The fact that someone would object to a necessary culling like this really emphasises the ignorance of some of our Aussie kids re this type of issue.
Great to see that kids do care, so it stands to reason that they deserve the chance to understand these issues. We really need a balanced education programme explaining environmental issues - especially educating people in the imbalance and damage caused by noxious & feral animals and plants. |

Such a severe statement, I would not mind IF it was correct, but it is not.
Should Australia get rid of its Capital City; then Government would be established elsewhere (at cost); and believe me Canberra would get on very well without such statements; since the people of Canberra are still the better educated in this country; and better educated then most members of government. |

But without all that free taxpayer funds proping up canberra's economy, what would you people do for an income?
It's not like we would continue to fund the place if didn't have to.
Without the rest of Australia pouring millions and millions of dinars into canberra, it would shut down with in a week.
