Who else here thinks Mr Jon Stanhope and Mr Simon Corbell and co. are building and opening a luxury holiday camp for criminals in the ACT?
The ACT is opening the first (quote) "human-rights compliant" (unquote) jail (if you could call it a "jail" if only for the loss of "freedom") with the first Prisoners moving in to this resort in September.
Criminals who rape, rob, burgle, maim and kill in the ACT will not be punished, but instead they will be locked up in a hotel with mountain views, pampering by the screws (who will also have RFID), and have all the luxuries of home in their cells for the duration of their sentence. |

What would you expect from the "Criminal Justice System"?
How IF they had put this money towards the Homeless people in Canberra, that would be something.
I wonder when the 3m for the homeless people went to. |

Just think $42.5m spent; and another $10M a year on this facility.
I would like to know what is spent on the Victims of Crime, as for Vocal that's a Wast of public Moneys. This service should be examined; nothing but lies, lies and old statistics. |

| Good question. Mr Softly Softly Stanhope & co. seems more interested in treating criminals to luxury than trying to fix our health system and helping crime victims. |

And now they're building another one, for the criminals that rape and torture their victims. |

| seems to me that, when your locked up - your locked up. whatever your locked up in is of no consequence. Your locked up AS punishment not FOR punishment |

| That sounds exactly like the contradictory oxymoron line the Stanhope Govt puts out. Both mean the same thing: PUNISHMENT |

ACT Corrections Minister Simon Corbell defended the facilities last week, saying they were vital to rehabilitating Canberra's prisoners and breaking the cycle of crime.
"Objectives with the prison was to make it human rights compliant and in terms of design that means ... an atmosphere which is healthy not just for prisoners and staff but for everyone who uses the facility," he said.
"It is about encouraging behaviours which will work in our favour when people are released back into the community, so if the environment can influence that, then that is a good thing."
With an operating budget of $24.5 million, the ACT Government anticipates it will cost taxpayers $336 a day for each inmate at the $131 million prison, based on a population of 200 prisoners.
At its capacity of 300 inmates the cost would fall to $219.
This is slightly less than what the Government currently pays $239 a day to keep an ACT prisoner in a NSW prison.
The prison will also negate the cost of keeping inmates in remand at other centres in Canberra, which currently costs the Government $444 for each prisoner a day.

That only deals with costs and sending prisoners to NSW, it doesn't answer the question of why we have to treat murders and rapists to a luxury time of it on the inside.
Do you work for Mr Stanhope or something? |

It could be that the Polies are thinking of themselves (just in case they end up there). |
