New Study Says Mega Earthquake Will Doom Seattle
By Caleb Hannan in News
Wednesday, Oct. 28 2009 @ 12:58PM
Continuing this week's Armageddon theme, a new study suggests that the earthquake everyone expects to hit the Puget Sound region will actually be much more devastating than first thought. It's not enough that Boeing is ditching us or that the Alaskan Way Viaduct will soon look like that Pirates of the Caribbean show at Disney World. Now we're all gonna die.
The gist of the study is this: The Cascadia fault, one of the biggest on Earth, will one day rupture. That we knew. That we've been prepared for. What we aren't prepared for is that the Olympic Peninsula, originally thought of as a natural barrier 60 miles off the coast, won't actually do anything to stop the resulting quake.
In short, we're screwed.
According to Discovery News, researchers at Central Washington have determined that a tectonic shift in Cascadia could send a "shotgun blast" of energy into greater Seattle. The resulting shakes might be stronger than anyone has planned for and "everything from small buildings to skyscrapers would be at risk of collapse." |

Been to Seattle and it's a lovely place. Not sure how they can be sure when the earthquake will hit. Going back next year so please try and get it over and done with before I get there.
Shame about Boeing |

| That would be a shame. Seattle is the only city in America where it's possible to get a decent cup of coffee. |

Yeah, but Seattle gave us Starbucks as well. It's not easily forgotten.
I didn't mind Frasier though. |

| I heard it was because it was near water or the sea and in the early days millions of cattle grazed in its rich green grassy plains... |
