Why Do We????????????????? Reply to this message
Why are we sending competitors to China? in the realm of human rights violations China must be in the top five. Aren't we giving our support to these people by not boycotting? Why should they change their ways when we will all just go off happily? What the hell is WRONG with us?

Because there is the belief that having the games go ahead would be more helpful in improving human rights than a boycott.

There should be NO politics in sports! any sportsperson with the ability to represent their country should be able to do so if they want. Some people only have one shot at it, so they must go because they never know for sure if they will have that ability in another 4 years.

I agree with foden21 there shouldn't be any politics in the Olympics, or any other sport having said that the Chinese themselves are bringing Politics into it how can they not with their government. I just don't think it should ever be chosen as a place for the Olympics in the first place. I feel sorry for all those athletes who have to compete in all that smog, I just hope they all come home not only with all the medals but fit & well too.

Without taking sides on this matter, it would appear nature is having the final word. The horrors of this quake will have had an enormous effect on many people who are planning to attend the games. Not only that, it will be difficult for the world to get into a cheery mood so soon after witnessing such heartbreaking tragedy. By the time the games arrive they will still be sifting through the ruins. I think this is an even worse blow for China than the Tibet problems..

Results of good and bad karma (be it that of a nation or an individual) usually appears at the best or worst possible circumstances. There has been a lot of past injustices all over the world. However, speaking of China, we all know there have been some terrible past injustices, particularly towards their own people. So it's a bit scary to think what may show up through nature and such over the next several weeks. I just hope and pray the innocent will be spared wherever possible.

I totally agree. Not only will the eyes of the world be on China, but hundreds of thousands of tourists will be in China who aren't just mainly former Chinese citizens going home to visit family but western citizens. There will be such scrutiny and an easier way for Chinese people to share stories of human rights abuse to the rest of the world that no amount of flashing lights or well choreographed events will be able to hide it.
