Donna, you girls these days are very lucky to get a baby bonus. Just be thankful you get it!
Wasnt around when I have both my kids.
I think its terrific you get it. Especially those who truly need it, and use it for what it was intended.
Went recently into a young mum's home as part of my job, and was met with pot smell coming out the front door, coupled with stale urine stink. Add to that no furniture, 5 kids under 7years old and very ready to burst with 6th. Grot and filth in every direction.
Guess she wasnt using her bonus to get cleaners in. UGH needed a shower when I got out of there, I was scratchin and itching...
**** scratching my head furiously after typing this****** |

It depends on who is going to pay for it?
It's a bit much to expect employers to pay (especially small business), so that leaves the government to foot the bill.
Having children is (normally) a choice, and children provide much for parents later in life that people without children don't get, so something about half the level of the dole would be reasonable. |

| Dont know bout anyone else but i stretched my bonus out over the year, buying groceries paying bills etc,my daughter wore hand me downs (she dont care neither do i)We struggled but hey we made it.Im due to go back to work in july.I KNOW THIS SYSTEM WASNT AROUND BACK IN THE DAY,but hey it helped.Cutting the baby bonus system would cut teenage pregnancy, dolies popping babies out one after the other.Paid maternity leave its the way to go.Well thats my opinion anyway |

For all those protesting that they didn't get this benefit, that they don't have, or don't expect to have, kids, please think about whether or not you believe that we should live in a completely user-pays society.
Then think about all the things that you don't use that you still pay for. From the roads you never travel on, the hospitals you never use, the Government Departments that you never interact with or the schools that you will never send a kid to.
Then tell me if you don't want to pay for those things either. |

Donna, dont get upset mate, was just pointing out how the bonus is misused, and that its a "bonus".
In this day, both you and your partner, HAVE to work to make ends meet. It ridiculous, but it IS that way. I sure would like to see it changed to help more, and so Mum can stay at home a bit longer to enjoy all the wonders that come with being a parent. Its amazing by how much a little each week goes further than one lump sum. |

I'd support it whole heartedly.
Honestly, the situation I saw, was horrendous. But after 5 kids, and so very much tax dollars, in bonuses, and the pension (was $1400.00 per fort) entering that particular home, I got angry that they lived that way. No child should be brought into that.
I have some fine friends who have to take their kids to day-care, when they're tiny, because they have to go back to work. Its not fair for all those doing "the right thing". |

| Just imagine...you could have a sick child and no one has fixed the hospital system or employed more doctors - because all the money was used on maternity allowance, baby bonus and child care rebates. |

| Spoken like a true benificiary of a pro woman system gone mad moringstar. You have the hide to judge the unemployed while comically believing lazy cows such as yourself are somehow deserving of financial gain simply for bearing children. Giving birth should in no way be viewed as an income opportunity but sadly todays crop of greedy Gimmee gimmee girls seem to associate the procedure with personal gain. Its pathetic and as other posters say ,previous generations managed on love alone and expected nothing for the priveledge of enjoying lifes greatest gift. |

No paid maternity leave it is not the responabilty of the government or an employer to pay you to have a baby.
Having a baby is a choice, your choice.....if you can't afford not to work don't have the baby or look at going without, adjust your lifestyle.
People who are on the dole that have kids to many different fathers should not keep getting the baby bonus as a way of discouraging them from pumping them out just for the money.
Paid maternity no way |

| not asking for a whole year 3-6months baby bonus over 6mths not a lump sum then class it as paid maternity that would discourage alot of people |

| I have no issue with the baby bonus, but look at maternity leave from an employers perspective. If a couple decide that they are to have a baby and the mother to be has no intention of returning to work, she can effectively recieve the baby bonus and paid maternity leave and not go back to work: a double dip. Instead of paid maternity leave a liberalisation of a leave credit system would be a much fairer prospect |

Be careful, you're in danger of bringing some logic into the discussion.
FTR, I agree entirely. It's not the responsibility of others to pay for your choice to have children.
I will be furious if this goes through. Another tax disguised as a levy. |

nw8hillbilly, if paid maternity leave was introduced I'm sure there would be some safeguards in place so a woman couldn't take the payment then not go back to work.
I don't agree with this "tax" for paid maternity leave. I do think there needs to be something across the board though. Either everyone gets it or no one does. I work in local government and got 4 weeks paid leave which I am grateful for. A mother in my mothers group works for state government and got 14 weeks paid leave. Other mothers got nothing. I just think it's unfair that some get it and others don't. |

| I also wanted to add that some people are trying to make this out to be a Male vs Female issue. It's not a gender issue. A male and a female have a baby together. This is as much an issue for men as it is for women. Most fathers work very hard for their families. Men should be as involved in this decision as women but not those men who are trying to use this issue for their anti-women agenda. |

| Although itn would be nice if everybody got paid maternity allowences(either the woman or the man if he decides to stay home), I dont really think that it is right for everybody else to fund it. I never recieved it and I've got 4 kids and had to give up work and adjust my lifestyle to bring them up.It would also be too much for small buissness to have to fund this , and if it did go through it could end up causing small buissness owners to refrain from hiring younger women, and even big buissnesses too. They wouldnt outrightly say this was the reason but it wouldnt surprise me if it happened. Maybe some sort of fund could be set up for those who see children as part of their future which could be payed into, and if there are no children could be either payed as super or given back to those paying it. |

| Well said nicznailz I wont go over what you say but I totally agree. There are to many young kids having babies just to get the money. As for maternity leave I'm afraid I'm of the old school I believe if you can't afford to have a child you shouldn't have one. Fancy having a beautiful gift like that to have someone else bring it up for you. If you want children then wait until you are financial then have them don't EXPECT everything handed to you on a silver platter it is not a god given right that you get maternity leave. I know this is going to cause a stink amongst a lot of you but it is the truth how I see it. |

would paternity leave be paid aswell?
I personally think the baby bonus shouldnt be a free to spend thing.. like $1000 needs to go to child care, $1000 to post natal classes etc to help new parents get back into jobs & to cope with the kids. |

spikemonkey: Honestly I do not know of any person around my age (19) who is wanting to have a baby for the bonus. If anything you scoff at the idea and it is actually rather insulting saying we are that stupid. What about the mothers 35 who are also going to be doing it? Stupidity isnt an issue that only effects young people..
and I agree. If you cant afford children why are you having them in the first place.

Gee you have a very sheltered life.......cause where i live you see them everyday especially pension day & a lot of them are younger than 19, by 19 they might have 1 walking, 1 in a stroller & another on the way, yea all that at 19. |
