I'm growing cucumbers as a project with the kids and so far it's been a roaring success. We have 3 plants that are around 4ft tall and flowering madly.
The thing is, I don't know what to do now. Do I need to thin them out? Should I cut them back? What's the go? Will they need pesticide? If so, what?
They do grwo along the ground but I've trained them up whatsies so they don't take over the place. They're up against the pool fence which should act as a trellis now but they're like friggin Triffids.
I've got tomatoes and cucumbers in at the moment along with p *** ly and basil etc
Just finished a crop of carrots and cherry tomatoes - gotta love the Qld weather - you can propogate all year round though I found a cane toad in my tomatoes last night filthy bugger.
I just bought a couple of those rectangular pots from Bunnings Indi - they're about 3ft long and 10 inches deep - have that water reservoir in the bottom. I propogated the seedlings in smaller pots and transplanted once they were around 4 inches tall. They need a fair bit of sun and water so I rigged up an irrigation thingy on a timer (easy to do - again from Bunnings). We had 6 plants going (yes with basil, Melli) - also lettuces at the same time in the same kind of arrangement - and it worked a treat. Good cropping fruit and extremely yum on pizzas!!!
Oh and because they're little buggers you don't have to invest in expensive trellis Indi - just some dowel or even cane/bamboo is fine. Depending on where you live, now is probably a good time to get cracking. They love heat and sun (but not too much!)
