You are to complete the spreadsheet above with formulas in the blue boxes. The formulas should calculate the grade for each student using the weightings indicated. For example, the grade in cell F7 should be 35/2+21/2+50*3/5 = 58.

How did the answer come to be 58?

35/2 = 17.5 +
21/2 = 10.5

10.5+17.5 = 28

28+ 50*3-5. 50*3 = 150/5=30
30+28= 58 :)

in spreadsheet formula the * symbol denotes multiplication

Yep...tess is right...basic mathematics...

35 divided by 2

+

21 divided by 2

+

50 multiplied by 3 divided by 5...

Technically the equation is wrong though...

It should really read (35/2)+(21/2)+(50*3)/5

Otherwise the answer would be 41.55 ;)

Nothing wrong with my attitude...i am just abrupt...tess...no need to show of...we can infer as to what the equation should be minus the brackets...

brocky, my answer was 58 without your change to the equation....as fanta set out her equation, I read 3/5 as three fifths of 50; answer 30...of course as you say (50*3)/5 also gives 30...
