At times like this, with the Islands of Samoa (and on a smaller scale) Tonga being hit by the tsunami and all the devastation that resulted, foreign aid is without question a must to help them rebuild their infrastructure and their homes, jobs and lives.
Then why are people here in NZ (dont know about Aus) griping about how much foreign aid these Islands already get and where it's gone to and why cant they look after themselves. A few even suggested that the P I's should leave their islands altogether because they're always being hit by bad weather in one form or another and needing extra help.
Have been hearing such talk on the radio, on talkback shows, including from other pacific islanders !
What are the Aus thoughts on this, as Aus also contributes to the pacific islands in the from of foreign aid. |

I don't think we have a problem giving to them, I think they are nice people----and they make good rugby players.
Personally I would see them right before I would think about giving to the Indonesians. |

Funnily enough, I've not heard grumbling about foreign aid to PI's.
Indonesia, on the other hand....
Maybe it has something to do with The Pacific Islands as being less 'threatening', having a reputation, generally, as more 'peaceful', and even the fact that they are desirable holiday destinations.
The sooner they rebuild, the sooner people can return for holidays, thus getting the economy back on its feet. |

The latest rumblings are about the amount of aid that's gone to Samoa and how much of it is being looted / stolen / held by the village chiefs and handed out to their own families and others who dont have the need.
Of course this had led to the usual racial comments but they seem to forget that in every disaster there is always someone out to make a buck and feather their own nest, regardless of which coubtry or disaster it is.
It's easy to slander a whole race than accept that everyone's not perfect. |
