One man will affect loyal US Muslims Reply to this message
There isn't a word to describe the heartache, pain, and sheer disgust that I felt when I woke up yesterday morning. A Muslim serviceman can always expect to face questions about his loyalty. When I was in uniform, for instance - a converted black sergeant from New Jersey - a converted black sergeant from New York, Hassan Akbar, turned on his fellow soldiers and murdered two of them.

I served with professionals, and the most I got from my fellow Marines was a few off-colour jokes. But I count myself among the fortunate. I wouldn't want to imagine what it's like for Muslims serving now - especially those at Fort Hood. You pray there won't be any issues. But you can't be sure.

The actions of this madman cost us, the many Muslims have served this country honourably over the years, so much. I, like them, make no secret of my love of my faith as well as my country and my Corps. Like everyone else, young Muslims want to serve even over the objection of their parents: they want to be part of something, they want to be their bit. Many American Muslim military personnel have honourable discharges; some others gave the ultimate sacrifice, and are buried at Arlington Cemetry. I want to say to Christians: this murderer is no more one of us than the paedophile priest, the abortion doctor killer, or the millions of prisoners behind bars are part of you.

And yet already our military loyalties, our honour, and our integrity are being questioned. Most American Muslims today are going to get up, get ready for work, send their kids off to school, and pray that nothing stupid happens because of their faith. My hope is that the professionalism of most armed forces units will mean that casual jokes and debate will be the norm. But violence is also possible.

Meanwhile, some non-Muslims still believe that an entire religious community shares responsibility for the actions of one guy that we didn't even know existed until yesterday. No other faith community is taken to task in this manner. I read the blogs and messageboards, and I understand people are upset - but the reaction is disheartening: calls for the expulsions of Muslims from the armed forces, or for a vetting process, or in a few cases for an all-out ban on Islam. So even as I make extra prayers and give Dua, I know that my fellow non-Muslim Americans would love to see me leave my country. I wonder where they would like me to go.

You know what? This wouldn't be the sentiment if the so called "silent majority of peaceful muslims" would stand up and be outraged with the rest of us. Where is their outrage? Why arent they marching in the streets over this like they did over stupid cartoons? If they are truly Americans they should be just as angry as we are. Stand up with us no matter what your beliefs or nationality and say NO MORE!...Until they do this the resentment is going to grow. All this guy seems to be heartbroken about is the possible backlash on Muslims. By keeping silent they are condoning it.

-ragz60481

"They" are the rest of you. I'm sure that amongst those voices opposing acts of terror and violence committed by extremists on behalf of Islam, there are many Muslim Americans. Unless of course, you can show me otherwise. You see, I wasn't aware one had to register their personal details prior to expressing their disdain toward something.

It would be totally unreasonable, and furthermore decisive, were every demographic held responsible (by way of not speaking out separate from others) for the ills committed by those few members who happen to fall within that same group.

And leaders have been, and are currently, making clear there condemnation of such acts. Perhaps you would better luck finding these expressions of regret, disgust and outrage, if you actually tried looking?

The actions of this guy in the states should be proof enough of the need for a most precise psycological and physical evaluation of anyone that wishes to enlist or is conscripted into any branch of the world's miliatary forces.

In the case of the guy in Texas the system obviously has been found to be inadequite.

I recall a case in Australia a few years ago where a young guy attempted to enlist in the army. He was rejected due to not being psycologically acceptable.
That evaluation proved to be accurate.
He later went on a shooting spree in Hoddle Street in Melbourne killing several innocent bystanders.

Ragz60481. You are disheartened I guess that too bad but regardless of what you may think it has now been proven that a far more stringent method of screening needs to be implemented on the part of the armed forces.

One dead, gunman held in US shooting

By Amy Green, AAP November 7, 2009, 1:28 pm

A disgruntled ex-worker shot dead one person and wounded five others in an office building in Florida on Friday before shouting "they left me to rot" as he was hauled into custody, police said.

In the second mass shooting in the United States in two days, the alleged shooter, 40-year-old Jason Rodriguez, apparently went to the office of his old firm and opened fire with a handgun, unleashing a hail of bullets on employees.

His eventual arrest at his mother's home after a tense, three-hour manhunt came as Americans reeled from a rampage 24 hours earlier at a Texas military base that left 13 people dead and 30 wounded.

Earlier, panicked Florida workers had barricaded themselves into their offices at the Gateway Center in central Orlando as SWAT teams combed through the 16-storey office building trying to find the shooter.

About three hours later, police acting on a tip converged on his mother's apartment where he surrendered without incident. It was not immediately clear if his mother or someone else had telephoned the authorities.

As he was dragged away by police in handcuffs he could be heard shouting to reporters in live television pictures, "They left me to rot," an apparent reference to his former employers.

"We have five that were victims of the shooting. We have one started having chest pains, and we do have one confirmed death," Orlando police chief Val Demings told a press conference.

"This is a tragedy, no doubt about it, especially on the heels of the tragedy in Fort Hood that is on our minds," Demings said. "I'm just glad we don't have any more fatalities or any more injuries than we currently have."

Re:One man will affect loyal US Muslims Reply to this message
as you can see from the article above.. violence is not political in America... and is part of every day "life"...

your article not only named the person who opened fire in Fort Hood wrongly.. his name was not Hassan Akbar..

it is also another Muslim bashing Muslim baiting article...

besides... the soldiers were going to Iraq.. and do US soldiers in Iraq do all the time? they kill innocent people.. that's all

the US could do us all a favour by containing its armed forces inside US territory..

and they can carry on killing each other until kingdom come, as far as I am concerned...

thing and that was proven to you, not that you

"had lots of fun proving it with links all the time..."

Re:One man will affect loyal US Muslims Reply to this message
...In the morning, neighbors said Hasan handed Qurans and donated his furniture to anyone who would take it.

Neighbors described Hasan as a quiet man who began wearing "Arabic clothing" in recent weeks. Edward Windsor, a neighbor, never suspected Hasan was in the Army. Hasan's rank surprised Windsor who would never have imagined an officer with a rank of major would have lived in an apartment that rents for $350 and houses soldiers ranked as private first class.

As Jawa Notes:

So he'd been wearing the white clothing of a Shaheed (martyr) for several weeks. Giving away his furniture. I guess the question now, given the history that is becoming apparent, how was this allowed to happen?

Those wern't my words. I was answering Jaykaye's post.

I couldnt agree more with you that there needs to be a more stringent method of screening implemented. I can also tell you exactly why this man slid through the cracks despite all of the red flags ( and he had many apparently) ...Political correctness. We have become so afraid of being accused of "profileing" we are destroying ourselves.

Hi Ragz

Hiya Shirl..:)

Last night on the 6pm news, there was a comment made, that in the future the armed forces would have to look at maybe banning Muslims.

Doubt they would ban them, but they are going to definately have to start profileing. On the other hand Obama is the Commander in Chief now, so that probably wont happen either.

Oh yes Dark, Obamas superior intelligence shines through more and more everyday!

Knee jerk , histrionic reactions are not in his vocabulary.

Actually there isn't much in his vocabulary without a teleprompter, but it is too bad he didn't feel the same way about Officer Crowley when Gates was screaming racist.

Lucky for you and your countrymen ragz.
