Okay, we know that the island appears to exist in a different timeline to the rest of the world, and that certain characters have the ability to time travel.
It is therefore possible that any time Christian is seen on the island, he is actually physically there and alive. What if he had travelled to the island in, say, 1998, and through either time travel or the island's natural time differential was able to interact with the characters that crashed there in 2004? After returning home (in 1998), his life began falling apart and he became an alcoholic (parallel with Jack). Eventually this leads to his trip to Sydney and subsequent death, leading Jack to the island in 2004.
If Christian's body was in the coffin (debatable) when the plane crashed, then there's another parallel, this time with Locke.
All of which leads to another question- were there any other island escapees on Oceanic 815 who needed to return to the island with Christian? |

Much as I hate to be answering my own question, some of the tail section survivors who were 'taken by the Others' could have been returning to the island. Cindy could have been waiting for an opportunity to leave, and a trek through dangerous ground gave her a good chance, with a low probability of being followed.
Also consider Christian's actions before 815. Returning to the island dead was an obvious parallel with Locke, but what about his demands to see Claire? Had she been to the island before and he wanted her to go back with him? She didn't remember meeting Christian when she was young, so obviously there are gaps in her memory- she could have been to the island and not remember. In this context, Richard Malkin's offer of plane tickets to facilitate an 'adoption' now makes a lot more sense. |
