I thought the polar bear theory was the right one at first due to Walt reading the comic but...
After watching season one again, when Sayid is with the french woman you can here growling etc and she grabs a gun and goes out after it and says "If we're lucky its one of the bears"..She has been there 16 years so theres a good chance they have been on the island much longer than Walt.
Interestingly just as she goes out Sayid says it might be the monster and she replies "there's no such thing as monsters" 16 years and doesn't know of the monster?.. Maybe its something else. Ideas? |

| hey mate good try of trying to dis-creddit a polar bear on the island!but polar bears can survive the heat and not only survive but enjoy it, i am from australia and we have a sea world and we have polar bears in open enviroment, and our queensland heat is hot. so i think that polar bears where on the island and where not just made up by walt. |

hey peter,
nice work. It could explain why desmond could not sail away from the island. Because the island intercepted him.
anyway. I featured your theory on my website. http://thelosthub.com/theories/polar-bears-theory/

but wild Polar bears do not eat in the warm months, they hunt the ice seals on sea ice and consume the fat and blubber leaving the rest of the carcuss for other animals..so a wild polar bear could not survive the tropics, it would starve. Could the DARHMA experiment have quickly evolved the polar bears to cope with sub tropic temps?? I am sorry but I have not watched that show in a long time, but I am doing a comm3 college essay on the plight of the polar bear and how global warming is effecting the polar bear (the wild polar bear WILL be extinct) just trying to get views on this polar bear in the tropics and wondering if it could happen, ya know to save the polar bears .
thanks 4 readin this |

| Polar bears couldnt stand the heat, and there is no food source..with there white fur they wait to ambush the seals who jump out of the ice water (thats there main hunting ability)they wouldnt be able to catch wild boar, because they are bright white.. no camo to hide amongst the trees. if there is any truth to the show there would have to be a frozen underground cave, where DHARMA supplies food. |

| The polar bears were part of the Dharma programme. They were the experiment on climatic adaptation, it is well known that Polar Bears cannot live in heat, they were genetically modified by Dharma to be able to. And I would have a small guess that the reason they chose Polar Bears is because outside the little island just happens a whole lot of ice and snow (as we see when the Brazilian guys working for Penelope see the island anomally). So whats to say that the experiment isn't on the island itself also, because if the guys looking for them were looking in an arctic region, the island is tropical not arctic. Hey these days we can stop hurricanes, whose to say the ppl of Dharma haven't learnt to control the weather (I mean it rains every time something bad is about to happen). As for the monster, Danielle said there is no such thing but she knows about it because when she takes them to Black Rock she tells them its a security system. Its like the sharks, I mean sharks have to live in tropical warm waters, as we see outside the island appears to be ice and snow, so why are sharks there? The same reason polar bears are. Maybe the whole point to the island is to test such climatic adaptation issues. I mean its a bit like the boar, animals adapt to different environments depending on the threats and ways to survive. Dharma was probably just helping that along |

Could the "tropical" island they are on had once been an arctic island that once was covered with permafrost?
If there is ice and frozen water then the polar bears could have easily swam there. (Polar Bear Fact: biologists now know that polar bears can swim 16-18 hours straight before drownding)
BE AN ENVIRONMENTALIST SAVE THE POLAR BEARS!! GO GREEN! |

| Matt Houston. If you have Season1 on DVD watch Exodus Part 1. Arzt is chased by the monster and Rousseau hides in some big clump of bamboo vine thingies with Jack and Kate. When it is gone Rousseau says that it is a security system that protects the island. |

| Also to a Polar bear it is like being stuck in a freezer and then plopped into a microwave. DHARMA obviously altered the bears' DNAs in a way so that they can withstand the heat. |

Did anybody notice that not only the polar came from Hurley's comic boook that Walt read. The episode 'special' lets you see aa few pages from the comic.
One page shows an alien in a lab with experiments being conducted. The alien is lying on a hospital bed. I noticed it looked similar to Claire lying in the bed at the medical station with Ethan doing tests on her.
Another page shows what looks like an... ISLAND.
the island has some sort of a dome around it exccept for a hole at the top. Maybe the hatch uses the electro magnetism or wwhatever to create a dome shaped sheild or cloak around the island. Possibly the end of season two resulted in the destruction and end of the shield/cloak. This would explain the bright light which was the shield/cloak visible before its destruction.
Finally, obviously the page with the Polaar Bear waas the reason for the polar bear encounters.
Walt may of seen Claire's tests with Ethan and the Polar Bear, but, like Walt, Hurley may have been a child on the island as well and he imagined the cloaked island while reading the comic.
Also, can Hurley read Spanish? Why was he reading a Spanish comic book on the pplane? |

| No it wasn't Walt's powers that made polar bears appear cause at the beginning of season 3 John Locke and Charlie save Echo from a polar bear cave and walt was gone already |

| I agree with dell_1912, his theory seems the most right and it is right, because we saw i think it was in season 3 the cages sawyer and kate were locked in were polar bear cages, obviously the polar bear that attacked walt and the polar bear sawyer shot dead obviously escaped, or maybe got released after experimenting. The dharma initiative were doing tests on them though. Why not, they were scientists after all. |

| I also think the whole idea with walt making them polar bears magically appear is abit far fetched, there are better theories out there |
