The purpose of The Pearl Reply to this message
This is the mystery I most wanted answered since season 2, but I think I've worked it out.

After the incident, the Dharma Initiative (DI) found a way to neutralise the electromagnetic energy by entering the code every 108 minutes, but by this time Richard knows of the Swan's existance and location. As the station is in Others' territory, the Others will not allow the DI to use it for experiments, but they recognise the necessity of entering the code to stabilise the area.

Therefore, the Others allow DI access to the station to enter the code, but want proof that there is no work being done there- and of course, they have better things to do than monitor the Swan's inhabitants. The Pearl was built and the 'psychological experiment' story invented to provide a mechanism for recording everything that happened at the Swan, for the benefit of the Others.

The notebooks were sent via the pneumatic tube to the Others' territory, so that they could make random checks of what was going on without having any contact.

Good thinking, great theory. Doesn't really matter unfortunately, I reckon the Pearl was only introduced to the show so that Locke and Eko would find it, and Locke would watch the video, hence deciding to stop pushing the button.

Still, I'm more than satisfied with your explanation, top job!

I love that theory. When the DI got killed off, would the Others have kept monitoring the Swan? Radzinsky and Kelvin (and then Desmond) had no contact with the outside world, other than the food drops, and might not even have known what happened to the rest of Dharma (unless one of them volunteered to make an expedition to find out).

Something I just realised: Pierre Chang doesn't have a prosthetic arm in the Pearl video, therefore the Pearl was built before the incident, ostensibly to monitor another station. Still, the Pearl could have been modified later to allow the Others to receive the notebooks rather than Dharma.

Was looking through the Long Live Locke website (reading up on her posts after re-watching Season 3 on 111 Hits!) and she said that the makers of lost have confirmed:

"The Others did not know about the Swan Station or Desmond and Kelvin’s button-pushing activities prior to the Losties’ arrival on the island."
