The lost island - I've worked it out!!! Reply to this message
The Lost island, by my reckoning is the mystical island of Avalon! In English legend Avalon was known as the Island of The Dead and was said to posses unique qualities. It was to this island that King Arthur supposedly went after he died, and a priestess there supposedly has the power to restore life, hence Arthur being known as the 'Once and future King'.
The Island of Avalon's location is a great mystery, it was supposedly looked for by many scholars and never found (though not for lack of false findings).

Hang on a minute, Island! Unique properties! Dead regaining life! Great mysterious ruler! Island that can't be found!

I put it to you my good theorists that The lost Island is in fact the Island of Avalon, a land where the dead regain life, and Arthur, under the assumed name of Jacob (Well Locke got a new name, so why not him) rules his people till the there till he makes his return.

It is also believed (by some) that Joseph (Jesus' dad) ventured to the Island of Avalon, carrying the cup that had caught Jesus' blood as it fell from the cross. It is there that he supposedly died (his grave, the grail, and the Island have not been found.....unless you beleive Indiana Jones, and that the grail's really in a stone palace in the desert somewhere)

It's definitely one of the many references used as inspiration for the show. I don't think they're going to reveal that the Island in the show is in fact the island of Avalon because the writers would want to distinguish their show from something that already exists in historical accounts, texts and to some extent popular culture. If they said the islands are the same, it would seem that they just copied something already done and that would diminish their work. At least, that's how I see it. But one can't deny the inspiration they took from the accounts of Avalon.
