| In support of part one I would point out the episode "Tricia Tanaka is Dead" This episode centered mainly around Hurley and was kinda lite hearted, but remember how it ended. Two subjects namely Hurley and Charlie climbed into a vehicle that mechanically speaking had no business functioning,by the force of their belief that the van would function-it did. This is a perfect example of a Hieronymus Machine. Due to pseudo-scientific nature of Hieronymus Machines those made by Dharma Initiative-or those that came before them-could be made to serve any purpose imaginable creating electromagnetic anomalies, generating sonic barriers the teleportation of the entire island. Even the "magic box" that Ben told Locke about in season 3 could be explained in this way. [also see my theory in spoiler section called LHC] |

Tis indeed a great theory Dave. Suspect this board is a little quiet now and you'll have to be a bit more patient for any follow up. FWIW I suspect the Hieronymus Machines will fit very much into explaining a big part of the Lost Universe. I can't decide however if its something that just explains much of Dharma's experiments or if everyone on the island is being moved to a point of 'belief' that will enable them to do something (individually and collectively) that is the whole point of the show.
That said I'm not sure the Van escapade was designed to be a direct example of this theory. It may well be something that resonates (ie belief in himself allowed Hurley to achieve something) but that Hurley directly 'fixed' the car with his mind
Still an intriguing idea that I suspect will become more overt in the next few seasons. We definitely have people believing in stuff with conviction (ie like the island won't let you die) which is then made real (which is the cause though and which is the effect)
