THE HIERONYMUS MACHINE Reply to this message
In season three's "Flashes Before Your Eyes" Desmond sees Charlie on the street singing "Wonderwall" and there is a sign that says "Charlie Hieronymus Pace" At first I thought it was just a reference to heroine. An anagram for hieronymus is Humes Irony, as in Desmond Hume, but what I think it really refers to is a Heironymus Machine. Heironymus machines are theoretical inventions that are supposed to harness psychic energies. They function solely because of their user's belief that they will work. In season 2 when Locke and Eko first find the Pearl Station they learn that it's purpose is to monitor the subjects in other stations, and that the task that the subjects are given are irrelevant. All that is relevant is that they believe it to be of the utmost impotance. Later on it is revealed that even the task of recording these events was irrelevent as the pneumatic tube that supposed to deliver the records they kept to headquarters actually dumped the canisters in an empty feild. I believe the function of the 6 stations,as well as the Pearl Station was to harness psychic energies of the subjects as they went about whatever pointless task they had been told were of such vital importance...........to be continued
