If anyone can be bothered, I suggest that you research a bit into the mythical greek island of Delos. For those who can't be bothered, I'll list some interesting facts about the island.
It was believed to be the birthplace of Apollo (remind you of any chocolate bars lying around the island?), Delos is translated as 'the visible' but was once called Adelos 'the invisible' where it would float and move around the sea, after the Greeks regained the island from the Persians in 426BC, there was a 'purification' where it was declared that 'no one could die or be born on the sacred island' (remind you of any problems the Other face with childbirth as well as the 'ageless' Richard?) and during its time as a sacred island to greek mythology, many monuments were erec.ted to dedicate Apollo (could the large foot statue once be a statue of Apollo?). Also to be connected to Apollo are the Dharma stations. Apollo is representative of an arrow (the Arrow), he is also the god of light and healing (the Flame and the Staff), his mother Leto was seduced by Zeus in swam-form (the Swan), his sister Artemis, also born on Delos was the goddess of vegetation, fertility and animals (the Hydra and the Orchid). Can't account for the Pearl, the Looking Glass or the Tempest though...
I'm not saying that the Island is Delos, but rather its what has given the writers inspiration for the Island on Lost, so we might be able to understand their thinking! |

Actually the island was named after a bird(I don't know how it's called in english) and Apollo changed its name to Delos because it was the only place that let his mother give birth to him and his sister. Delos means "being under light", the island was "adelos" (hidden in one meaning) and floating around until Apollo stopped it. Swans flew around during his birth and became the god's bird symbol. Apollo was supposed to be (amongst others) the god of forthseeing.

The purification took place twice. The first time all the graves were digged up and during the second all the bones were transfered to an island near by. After that there was the restriction of births and deaths on the island. When Athens took over the island from the Romans they kicked out all the original habitats and sent their own people. Sounds familiar too?

I guess the writers did a lot of searching before they wrote the story. Greek mythology, various religious, literature, science and who knows what else...

Actually slightly off your theory (but not entirely disproving it). The island may be Atlantis. Okay, sure, not a great big city, but the general moving of the island to people outside of its effect looks like its sunk.

A possibility. Might even be thrown in as a part of the back story when the writers eventually get around to explaining it all. ie Ben says The island was once known as Atlantis before it got moved. The mythology of it "sinking" might just be the story that evolved to explain what was actually a relocation.
FWIW the wave pattern from the island disappearing is consistant with it just disappearing as well as sinking.
