Perhaps polar bears had been used in the past to turn the wheel in the past - to stop people from having to turn the wheel and not being able to return to the island?
You know how Charlotte found the dharma polar bear in the desert? After Ben turned the wheel he appeared in the desert...
It would explain why polar bears are on the island too... because its so cold where the wheel is and they would need something strong to turn the wheel...
Bizzare theory but it kinda makes sence :) |

| Or perhaps the Island was once located in a much colder place. Did you notice when Ben was down in that ice pit moving the wheel that there was an engraved stone post next to him? It had a bunch of weird heiroglyphics carved into it. |

| there was hiroglyphics! i saw that too! i reckon both your theories could be righte, probably the island had been in a cold place before and polar bears were there and they got it to move the donkey wheel and thats hwere charlotte found the colar. listen. Charlotte has been looking for the island because she believes that is where she was born and she thought that desert was where the island was, that was on of her clues to find the island. |

You're suggesting the ancient guys who summon smokey and have an ice wheel to move the island somehow squished polar bears into that little hole into an ice room with no other entrance or exit and made them somehow move around the ice wheel even though there would hardly be any space for even one polar bear to make one turn?
Oh and you're also suggesting that DHARMA expected there to be polar bears on the island they could do gene therapy on and they just didn't bring their own because of course there are polar bears on a tropical island! Don't be stupid!
But okay, if we ignore all that stuff we can say that they used polar bears so they wouldn't get banished and that's why the polar bear also was in Tunisia like Ben and somehow the island just decides to drop you in Tunisia out of all the places if you turn the wheel. |

Its a theory for a reason :)
The wheel would not always be accessed the way Ben accessed it - since he had to blow a hole in a wall to get there. There must be another way to get there, as you'd assume the island had been moved in the past.
I'd say perhaps Dharma brought them to the island, for experiments and such, which I believe can be found in one of the dharma video's. Or they found them there, and wanted to understand why they were there (and this could be the reason)
We do know the polar bears had some kind of training though, as they learn't how to access the fish biscuits in the cage.
But again its all theory, not fact. Its up to you whether you decide to believe it or not. |

Remember turning the wheel is not to be done lightly. Its likely it hasn't been done in modern times at all (ie say the last 50 years) and is only done on rare occasions down through history.
I also don't get the impression its the sort of thing you can do an 'end run' around and trick the island. Of all people you'd thing our pragmatic and plan way ahead Ben would have rigged up something? No IMO as Ben looked to the heavens and said "I hope you're happy Jacob" he was accepting his time on the island was over and he had to turn the wheel.
The polar bears do definately point the island being some sort of nexus point where polar bears might have ended up on the island by chance. And I suspect the Dharma team was using anything it could get its hands on to try experiments.
As Ben said, they were just do "Silly experiments". Its like you had the whole Donkey Wheel cave and Dharma totally missed its true significance and instead built a lab on top of it to test out Time Travelling bunnies.

| Oh come on, polar bears fitting in that cave? Yeah okay, possibly I'd believe it if the cave wasn't always a cave or there was another place as well! |

Fantastic theory Ivory!! Really good thinking!
Surely there has to be some connection between the polar bear Charlotte found in the middle of the desert and Ben waking up in the middle of the desert. Who knows what the Dharma initiative were doing with those poor bears.
However, I had a theory earlier on in the year that the Island was near Africa, not in the Pacific, although this has been disproved, the idea that the Island was once near Africa is quite plausible to me.
For example, Locke said the Blackrock sailed from Mozambique, Africa, in late 19th century. Also, the polar bear that Charlotte found with the Hydra collar, could it be that this particular bear escaped and swam to Africa if the Island was nearby?
But the most significant piece of evidence that to me shows that the Island could have been near Africa is Eko's drug smuggler plane, there is no way that this plane could have flown from Nigeria to the Pacific, unless maybe the Island wasn't in the Pacific to begin with.
Anyway, my point is, say the Island was somewhere near Africa at the time when Yemmi's plane crashed there, and so has it been moved recently? This could explain all these strange occurrences. And so who is the person who originally moved the Island? Widmore? Hallowax? Abaddon?
Can't wait 'til next season!! |
