ever since season one we where given clues about black/white, good/evil,losties/talies, dharma/hostiles ying and yang I have choose to open this for dicussion now becuase i feel that it is very important and has resurfaced it self. i think that there are two forces working in lost and i also think that every character has a there counterpoint this is also there constant. i will go on to explain by having some examples.
one of the more obviouse: Jack and Locke
besides being the man of science and the man of faith jack and locke have now split i am still counting locke as alive becuase i elive he will return in a christain shephard way was brought back ot the island.
Jack: offisland, out of control, desperate, has not found prupose
Locke: on island, in total control, has restored faith, has found purpose
now it isnt just opposites that connect people they have to rely on each other for example
Jack now needs Locke to return to the island and restore himself to furfill his purpose. on the other side Locke needs Jack to help the island and furfill his purpose.
i also think that Jack and Locke are each others constants i think that if you ever arrive on the island you need a constant because the island can move at any given moment you may be off the island in 2005 but the island could move from 2004 (when you are on it) to 2005.
locke and jack have made contact offisland and on island.
another example ben and widmore
this has been said but they cant kill each other because they are constants.
Ben needs Widmore just as widmore needs Ben
these to do share many of the sme quallities but they are two oposing forces.
next
charlie and desmond and before you all start thinking but i thought Penny was Desmonds constant here me out
after the hatch imploded Desmond started experiencing visions we later learnt was the result of time travelling.

in the constant we learn that time travelling can have diar consequences but why didnt desmond experince these side effects before. becuase he had his constant Charlie
in flashes before your eyes charlie appears in both of the timelines on island and off island desmond makes contact with him both times.
charlie needs desmon dto tell him he has to go down ot the looking glass and turn of the blocking mechanism this was charlie's purpose which he couldnt of have furfilled with out desmond and desmond needed charlie to turn off the mechanism so that he coul dmake contact with penny who could follow the signal and be reunited with desmonf / resuce O6
now once desmond left the island he experienced the side effects becuase he has left the island and there for his constant does not exsit in his world. this is when he find penny as his new constant and you all know the rest
finnally i want to mention two more people
Aaron and Ji Yeon
one is a boy one is a girl(duh)
they both tested the boundaries of preganices and births on the island- aaron concieved on off island born on island
ji yeon- concieved on island born off island
i can not think of anymore for them but they are babies so they we dont really know much about them but i have avery strong feeling they are going to be one
i foyu can think of any more feel free to tell as i said i think this topic is important an di hope o have nt made any mistakes with my thoery but if i have feel free to corect me and shoot my theory to h.ell |

| I'd say run with this theory. It's an excellent one. Especially the point about Charlie and Desmond. That was a stroke of genius. |

| Well I don't know how much more you can add to that. It's a pretty extensive explanation. My contribution would be to keep watching for anything major that happens and see if you're then able to predict its opposite. That would support the theory. I'm doing a 4 season-long marathon of LOST here so if anything pops up, I'll mention it. |

Well thought out. However people have put a lot of emphasis on what a constant is without much info. I can't remember how it was decided that Penny was Desmond's constant (other than he loves her a lot) but the selection process seems quite arbitrary and unique to the individual. Miles thinks Desmond is his constant. The constant seems more to be about someone that has had a profound impact upon your life (good or bad) and whom you have a strong connection to because of that bond. You can presumably have multiple constants. As such killing your constant wouldn't seem to be a huge issue (unless you then suffered a time travel loop) but then presumably you could pick another constant anyway.
Much has been made of Ben and Whitmore being 'unable' to kill each other and they certainly would seem to be happy to do so if they had the chance. Whitmore's question "Come to kill me?" would seem stupid if he's aware its not an option. So I'm suspecting he can be 'killed' but that this is not a permanent state for some reason. Same way Locke's 'death' is yet to be undone.
