These are my theories to the storyline for LOST so far...
Synopsis:
As seen throughout season one and two, when the "Losties" have discovered a new hatch, each is different to suit its specific purpose.
The reason as to why only "the Swan" hatch has the numbers and computer has something to do with the study of geological and electromagnetic (EM) energies found in that region of the island. However, this was halted due to "the Incident" that occured, resulting in the current protocol being implemented. (Refer to the Orientation Film.)
In the recent episode "LOCKDOWN", a very important clue is given in the form of a map drawn on the blast doors. This map has much significant information as to what has happened before the arrival of the "Losties" to the island, and information on the so-called "INCIDENT".
THEORY #1: WHY PRESS THE BUTTON?
My initial theory as to why they must press the button is to discharge a large amount of accumulated EM energy which is a result of an error that occurred when DHARMA attempted to harness the islands geological and EM energies. The name CERBERUS is mentioned a few times.
THEORY #2: WHAT IS DHARMA'S REAL PURPOSE?
The DHARMA Initative's purpose is to improve upon humanity as a whole, that is finding a so-called "Fountain of Youth". However, I believe that DHARMA is most likely the cause of humanity's destruction rather than its salvation.
The reason for this conclusion is the location of the island (somewhere in the Pacific Ocean). If you search in Google for "The Pacific Ring of Fire" you will more than likely find numerous sites that explain that an apocalyptic scenario may occur if all volcanos throughout this "Ring of Fire" were to erupt simultaneously.
My reasoning for this is that "IF" the numbers were not entered, would it result in the accumulation of a huge amount of EM energy powerful enough to literally rock the foundations of the earth, resulting in the eruption of "THE PACIFIC RING OF FIRE"???? |

THEORY #3: WHAT IS CERBERUS?
My understanding of ancient mythology says that CERBERUS is the Hell Hound, also known as the Harbringer of the Apocalypse.
In the case of LOST, I believe it to refer to an error that may have apocalyptic consequences, if certain protocols or guidelines are not implemented and carried out.
Therefore, I believe that DHARMA's version of CERBERUS is the "Incident" mentioned on the Orientation Film and on the map on the blast door.
THEORY #4: SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION.
What is really weird is how each person/character on the island is connected to each other in some way or another.
I play this game with friends called Six Degrees of Separation. Name two people and attempt to find the most logical and conclusive connection between both by means of six other people.
Im not sure how it works with LOST, but it's a thought.

Yeah each hatch serves a particular purpose:
1) Swan Hatch - Like u said it for Electromagnetic
2) Medical Hatch - As the name suggest it for medical.
3) Arrow Hatch - Storage Hatch
4) Pearl Hatch - Oberservation Hatch
5) Unknown Hatch - The one on the north-side of the island is where the 'others' are.
The secret map appeared on the blast door. You know how in the middle of the map is a circle around the '?' and the hatches are around the '?', notice the hatches have been crossed out at the part facing the '?'. Could there be some sort of hidden entrances (or the 'tunnel' has been collapsed and filled) that may lead to the centre?
I would agree with you how they have to push to the button to discharge the EM energy. I would think it's true that it may lead to an 'incident', when locke didn't push the button in time the computer started to run (it could be nothing).
Also by not discharging the built up EM. It could effect earth's magnetic field (Like the movie "The Core") and can start affecting the Earth and may cause massive eruption in the "Ring of fire" and maybe other volcanos around the world since volcano are linked to the centre of the Earth where the cores is. If a sudden burst of EM could effect the magnetic field and maybe stop the core from spining (the earth's core spins to produce the magnetic field) when it react with the burst of EM. Which this suggest it could be the end of the world, and based on kallosalkev2001 - "I believe that DHARMA is most likely the cause of humanity's destruction rather than its salvation." It could be that Dharma mistake when constructing the hatch, which every construction made bound to have something went wrong (maybe), which from their mistake they found another solution to fix it, i.e. pushing the button.

If you seen "The Core" you know the how the Earth's magnetic field can affects the earth if the field wasn't there, like:
1) Birds can't navigate around the earth.
2) Intense Storms
3) Nothing to protect use from Sun's harmful rays. Which these harmful rays could sterlise the earth.
4) ETC...
The point 3 is obviuosly the most important thing which have the potential to kill humans, plants, animals, and insects.

THE CORE!! THAT'S THE MOVIE I WAS THINKING OF!!
I really doubt that the incident involved errors in the construction of the hatch.
What I really think is that DHARMA underestimated the levels of geological and electromagnetic (EM) energy being produced by the island.
The most likely cause for the incident would have been the attempt to harness the energy, which resulted in it overcoming any pre-set parameters that were set by the DHARMA personnel who were monitoring it's containment.
My initial reaction to the involvement of EM waves and EM energy at such a large scale, made me think about the impact that they would have on the core of the planet.
As lostchess2006 mentioned, the movie "The Core" provides a good example of the outcomes of such an occurance.
In particular his/her third point in regards to the sun's rays "sterilising" the planet of life made me think.
NOTE: Half the planet is in darkness, therefore it would be difficult for the sun rays to impact the earth simultaneously. I would think that people would start floating off into space and firstly die with need of air to breath. Be aware that it takes 8 minutes for the sun's rays to reach earth.
I'll get back to you on more theories!! |

| yea maybe not concerning the constrution on the Hatch, but you never know if they did or not, since they are smart so i would assume they did not make i mistake on building the hatch. |

I have a (long) thought on what you were saying about "The Incident" and "Cerberus"
Dr. Marvin Candle in the orientation film didnt actually say that the incident had anything to do with entering the numbers. he said words to the effect of "The computer is not to be used for communication with the outside world. Non-compliance may result in another incident"
This leads me to believe that the much feared incident was not a result of not entering the code.
Cerberus was the the guardian to the gate of Hades and ensured that no one could enter or exit. i believe that Cerberus refers to "smokey" as it guards the hatches underground, and is let out of cerberus vents (refered to as CV on the blast door map).
Cerberus might also refer to the incident as i believe the incident to be an uprising of the Dharma Initiative subjects (i cant say why i think they took over, it may contain a spoiler) which is why the map says cerberus activity, especially around the areas where there is known to be activity of "the others". This may also explain why the connecting tunnels had been closed off, more to keep hostiles out than anything else.
I know this may sound odd because the incident occured before the orientation film was created, but if you study the map like I have, you will see that it says AH/MDG incident 1985 possible catastophic malfunction of Cerberus system. The cerberus system, assuming it is a "guardian" as i say, may have stopped working and allowed a hostile take over. this may indicate that the time stamp of 1980 on the film is false. (why I am sure of this may also be a spoiler) |

I had a noticed long time ago that everytime the blackmist escape it usually throught undeground, which also suggest that the blackmsit could be protecting any underground hatches (but there one problem with it the Swan Hatch is underground as well, maybe the more secret underground hatches in the middle of the island). Few episode back, when the blackmist try dragged Locke into a hole - Could that hole be one of the entrances in the underground Hatches? Could The blackmist lead them to the enterance of the hatch, but they didn't realise? It was like the first time it drag a person, epecialy that person whole believes in faith i.e Locke, and as well he told Jack to let him go. Could Locke know more than he lets on?
I never knew Cerberus was like the guadian to the gate of Hades, which it could be simialar to the blackmist guarding and underground entrances.
The 'incident' was said br Marvin Candle in the Orientation film that if you don't press the button within 108 minutes, there would be and 'incident' - i'm sure of it.
The time stamp on the film could be right, it could have been filmed off the island as preparation for the occupants inside the hatch. As well in the background it's different to the real hatch.

first and foremost, i went back and watched the orientation film and he doenst say that the incident was from not pushing the button. he said what i quoted.
they may have filmed it outside the island and they probably did, but this does not mean that the time stamp is right. I believe it is made to look like it was filmed after the incident. i have concluded this because of the evidence I have found.
One part of my theorie is derived from a future episode, and when you see it you will start to think the same about the time stamp.
On the map it states that a catastophic shutdown of cerebrus systems incident occured in 1985, five years after the time stamp, as I have already said. and I dont think that there has been too many catastophic incidents on the one island.
i have only posted my theorie because i have researched it and there is ecidence to back myself up. i wouldnt post anything if i hadnt found something to suggest it |
