Do any of you guys think Ben knows about the anomaly?? I think he does Back in Season 2 in the i think Episode "Lockdown" where John was trap under the blast door and we know Ben like to play head games with people. So i was thinking he did pressed the button (so it won't knock out the communication with the outside world and the beacon for the submarine) but told Locke he didn't press the button at all to make he lose his faith with the button. Since the Swan Hatch imploded on the last episode of Season 2, it did knock out the outside communication. So on the Last week episode Ben told us it was a one way trip back to the real world and because the beacon has been knocked out they cannot find the island again.

That could explain why Ben made the promise to Jack if Jack leaves the island Ben will free Sayid and Kate (since the submarine is capable of taking people back to the real world and it is leaving with Jack, which we know it is a one way ticket back home) Also, Ben didn't even try to stop Locke from blowing up the Submarine, even if Ben knew his plan all along. Knowing the Submarine is useless now, only can got a one last trip to the real world and never coming back to the island.

but i still don't know Ben's plan to make Jack leave the island, and don't know what it will accomplish from letting him go.

Re:..:: THEORIES & CLUES ::.. Reply to this message
I have a theory and I'm not sure if it has been mentioned before. But this is based on the quote of producers that the show is based on scientific fact.

The island is igneous rock. This is from it's appearance and hence it is more magnetic that other forms of rock. Now imagine, if this is a lot more magnetic than any other land mass/rock form ever previously found. Because of this Minnesota Metallurgy and Mining Co (a division of Widmore) investigates the island. They decide to set up a base to conduct experiments on magnetism. They need a cleanish, long lasting power source for these people to live and operate their machines and appliances. They build a small nuclear reactor (perhaps converted from a submarine). It has a mechanical issue which results in the need to discharge excess electricity through the air in waves to dispel the charge. This combines with the magnetism to create an electro-magnetic field that covers the island.

Electro-magnetic fields have the ability to bend light. If it holds the whole island in the field than the whole island could be invisible to passing ships, planes etc because we only see light reflected into the back of our eye. Maybe you can only see the island if your not looking at it and hence it is considered a legend of the sea (a mirage if you will). If the light is all bent in the one direction toward a focalpoint this could explain why michael had to follow an exact bearing to leave the island with walt.

A submarine would be perfect as a transport to such a place if it used sonar to locate it's surroundings which works on soundwaves not light waves.

The only problem i have is that an electromagnetic field that large would probably render most electronic equipment useless (perhaps that's something that the fence does to allow for a more comfortable living environment).

Any thoughts?

Re:..:: THEORIES & CLUES ::.. Reply to this message
good ideas tho. But i think the electromagnetic waves don't really affect the machinery. If like you said the EM Waves would be covering/cloaking the island at a constant rate. But if it was a EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse) it is a different story, it works like suddenly sending large amount of current in one go ot any electronics, which will overload the equipment and render it dead and useless. That overload make sense after Locke didn't press the button and couldn't discharge it and the charge keeps on building up until it can't told it in and it explode out and the Swan Hatch imploded. That's how the Flame Hatch (or Communication Hatch) equipment was render useless and offline, like the Sonar and Satellite Dish.

I also agree with how the submarine uses sonar to find things. Sound waves also travels faster in water than in the air and the can send the sound waves, i.e. sonar, to the sub and than the sub can head towards it.

But that security fence i think was a sound waves instead of an EM Waves. They put at a really really high Pitch sound enough to damage the eardrum real bad to cause it bleeding. But for EM Waves i don't think it will do much damage to the ear drum. I although regarding the security fence this is a flaw theory based on the fact of why Locke, Kate, Danielle and Sayid didn't hear it on either side of the fence, only when u go through the active fence...

Thankyou for clearing that up a little bit. I consider myself reasonably intelligent but science was never my thing at highschool and definately not a uni (humanities I'm afraid). I always thought science was the recitation of the periodic table and definate yes and no answers. But this is fun.

My only knowledge of EM was EMP bombs used by the military so i wasn't sure about the machinery and such. I do have some more questions, but since i have watched the season finale I don't want to inadvertantly spoil.

I may start a discussion on this theory in spoilers or spoiler theories.

This just popped in to my head...what happened to the lions and tigers that Rousseau mentioned in season 1. We have never seen them. Seems kinda strange considering. And what was the polar bear eating to stay alive? The boar aren't exactly plentiful.

Lostchess,

Good pickup on the sub.

I just re ran the secret clue from 13 and looks like your right. So Locke has sunk the sub, can't have taken it far, as he would need to cast off at least 2 lines after starting the engines (even on battery power), submerging (possible if he watched all those war movies, how hard can it be to sink one?) and parking it on the bottom of the bay. He then uses an escape hatch, leaving the outer entry open so he can return.

What gets me is how he managed to rig an electrical timer on the C4. The dets were all electric.

Okay...but Rousseau was arming herself in that early meeting incase she encountered these creatures. So they must have been a menace to her in the 16 years she had spent there. But Mikhail's farm had livestock that wouldn've been easy prey for hungry tigers and lions. I mean they must of had a source of food and apart from boar there is no other fleshy animal that we have come across that it would prey on. Unless they all ate each other in a bizarre reality tv show called "Dharma Presents When Lions Attack Tigers Attacking Polar Bears".

Re:..:: THEORIES & CLUES ::.. Reply to this message
We have to be getting close to some answers, Ben's discussion with Locke over the wheelchair was interesting if not particularly illuminating. Locke instinctively (pending other information) understands the nature of the island, and it spontaneously and almost instantaneously cured him of a broken back and Rose has been cured of cancer.

Yet Ben, who was born on the island is still in the wheelchair? The island hasn't cured him. Why? What is it in Locke's life that prepared him for a cure? Was it need and desire. Locke needed to be able to move to survive, whereas Ben is enjoying the cossetting he is getting as an invalid.

Of course that leaves .......HOW???????

I'm still stuck on nanotech. From my perspective, that's the only relatively viable (i.e. forseeable) technological solution. You could of course go back to a faith/religious argument, but, and pending further info of course, I'm sticking with nanotech.

ruttiger, my theory on this is that Rousseau was arming herself against the others, there may have been a time when Lions and Tigers and Bears (Oh My!) were running around the island, but that may have been a test for Smokey possilby aka the security system.

Re:..:: THEORIES & CLUES ::.. Reply to this message
i think locke just docked it somewhere else not set in it in the bottom of the bay. If Locke's plan was use it to escape, it would be more easier to escape if the Sub was docked somewhere else and not submerged underwater. Otherwise if it was submerged it would take longer to get to the sub by swimming down to it, also the problem of trying not to let the water in the hatch but opening the outer hatch, then close the outer hatch, then drain the water and open the inner door to get inside, and so on (it will obviously take longer depending on how many people are going to enter the Sub).

Assume that the submarine has 2 doors, but since and most likely it was an old Sub i think it still have the normal one door, so it would require to get in he sub from the surface. Otherwise obviously the water will go into the sub and sink it. But in terms of why Locke is wet is he swan back to the wharf to plant the C4 more quietly then if he was to walk on land where the "others" are.
