polar bear(s) theory Reply to this message
just a small theory.
is the island a floating island, that floated to either the north or south pole, picked up a couple of polar bears, and then drifted off into who knows where?

and another one to do with it being a floating island.
would this be why nobody knows where they are? are they (losties, tailies and possibly the others) changing places without relising it?

Funny how polar bears can get hot in the sub-zero temperatues of their own habitats. How is this show going to explain them running around on a tropical island with a tropical climate?
Perhaps the bears were just created out of thin air from Walt's mind? Haven't seen them since he's been gone.
As for the floating island: Dr. Marvin Candle did mention something about a 'moving station'. I was talking to a friend who is confident that the island is actually rotating. His rationale is that the sunrise and sunset both appear over the same horizon, as seen from the view of the ocean from the beach the survivors live on. I haven't taken the time to examine this but if it were true it would open a whole new range of possibilities.
But then, why would you need a moving island? What's the point? Is it really an island?

I'm thinking there's a possibility that the island isn't so hot and sunny all year round and that it can get to sub-zero temps, and can therefore be an explanation for the polar bears existence. They can stand the harshest heat but if for some reason it freezes over, the survivors are stuffed but it explains how the bears got there and why they stay...

i'm in agreement with the above post.

walt was reading Hurley's comic book right before they saw the polar bear. remember in that flashback he was studying rare birds and the moment he got angry one of those very rare birds crashed into the window?

could it be a similar scenario? michael had made walt angry.... ??

Because the enclosure that they're in is cooled to replicate what the bears are used to. If you've ever been to Sea World you'll notice that the glass around them is cold. If the Polar bears were exposed to Queensland heat they wouldn't last too long.

i agree the polar bears come from walts mind and his powers but why walt would want the polar bears to hurt people i'm not sure maybe he can create them but not control them. As for polar bears in queensland, have you ever been to seaworld? They live in like a super air con area or they'ed die or get real sick, thats why the polarbears either come from walts mind or maybe with all the experments

I think the polar bears are there because they are a part of the Dharma experiment. The same with the boars.

Re:polar bear(s) theory Reply to this message
ok maybe it is in walt's mind coz the island has seen weirder things BUT as i said earlier, just wanted to let you all know that polar bears can actually stand heat up to 50 odd degrees... so regardless of whether their glass is cold or not, they could survive the qld heat, not just at sea world but anywhere!

To kooky_pook:

OK, kid do your research. And when you do, make sure you understand what you're reading.

From Wikipedia: "The coat does however insulate the bears to the point where they overheat at temperatures above 10°C (50°F) "

Do you know the difference between Celsius and Farenheit?

I believe Walt has an adventurous mind like any kid and reading his comic book he was angry because of his mum and dad splitting and couldnt adapt to bieng with his father after so long so his out was to bring out his angers on a polar bear from his comic

We don't really feel the Earth moving, but it's revolving all the time. Likewise, I think the island would be large enough for moving to go unnoticed.

With the polar bears - perhaps DHARMA has genetically modified them in some way. We know that it's extremely unlikely for a bear from the polar regions of the globe to suddenly be able to dwell in a tropical habitat. But I wouldn't rule out the possibility of them being real and not merely created out of thin air from Walt's sadistic little mind.
So, I'm looking forward to an explanation on this in a future episode.

i think that the polar bears, sharks and some of the other were made by the dharma group and a scintific experiment that all went wrong. because why do the polar bear and the shark have drama signs on them? and hte experiment must have worked on some of the others too and make them go crazy!

Re:polar bear(s) theory Reply to this message
The polar bear and the shark AREN'T related. If they were both part of the Dharma experimentation, the polar bear would have had the insignia on it, like the shark did.

The polar bear is from Walt's imagination, and has something to do with why he was taken, and how he can appear to Shannon.

The boars were probably on the island long before the Dharma Group got there....

The island is moving, explains how Sawyer and Michael made it back to the island so quickly after raft destroyed.
Polar bears were put there by Dharma for experiments, did anyone not watch the Dharma videos? There is polar bears on them ! Another theory, its not an island. Just abandoned coast line,

Ok I am sorry but if I am mistaken there was a Dharma Logo on the Bear that Sawyer shot in S01. Just behind the ear there is a tattoo of it. But you gotta look close.
Ergo they are both infact Part of the Zoology studies.
