i noticed a couple of episodes ago when they showed the DI doing construction work on the swan station all the noises being made by drills, metal banging together etc.
remember the sounds smokey makes? they are identical to those noises.
my theory is this:
smokey was accidentally created as a direct result of the incident at the swan. not sure how yet but i've got a pretty good feeling that this will happen in "the incident".
any thoughts? |

I didn't notice that sound, will go back and watch.
I thought the smoke monster was the spirit of Anubis. Did you see the Egyptian black jackal-headed man engraved above where the smoke monster lives? When Ben went underneath the Temple to be judged. That's Anubis who was an ancient Egyptian god of the underworld who guided and protected the spirits of the dead.
In Egyptian times, after the body was placed into the tomb, Anubis would lead the deceased to the afterlife. And this makes sense with smokey, everytime someone on the island resolves an issue from their past or completes their mission in life, smokey shows up, looks into their soul and then they die. So it's like he judges them, and if they are ready to die because they have resolved their issue, which they all do (echo, boone, shannon etc) he takes them to the afterlife. Exactly like Anubis.
Anubis also protected the souls of the dead and their eternal place. So maybe that's also a clue???
