| There is none because the show hadn't progressed enough to reveal many clues. |

beardmoreharley, the Lost producer said that the black thing "supposibly" pushing the guy into the turbine was just a malfunction of equipment. and they also said that Smokey wasn't going to be in the 1st eps.
so you better look real closly next time you watch. its just a glitch |

| There was some specualtion over that 'blck' object, i thought for sure it was smokey when i looked over it again, i was like WOAH!!! It's SMOKEY man! but then in an interview with Damon Lindelof and Carlton cuse i think on one of their podcasts they unnfortunatley gave us the sad news that it was supposed to be cloths and rags and debris etc. flying around. Apperently Kevin Blank (the FX guy) said he had no idea what the monster was or looked like when they were in post productionfor the 'pilot' so that's why he didin't take the time to colour the debris different colours, although if you look closley there is also red ones flying around too.... |

go to lostpedia and do a search for 'turbine explosion'
"The object was considered by some fans at first to be the Smoke Monster. However, in one of the Official Lost Podcasts, Damon Lindelof stated that the Monster never appeared physically in the Pilot episode. Later on, they go into detail about CG errors."
"Javier Grillo-Marxuach specifically states that the smoke monster didn't cause the explosion, Gary Troup getting sucked in did. Accordingly, the theory is considered to be officially DEBUNKED." |

if you watch Exodus part 1 2 and 3 (season 1 finale) you see the Black smoke heaps! you even get a clear shot of it once, then it quickly runs...well flies away.
you can see smoke around johns leg when he is pulled down the whole.
trust me, you see it heaps, if you know what your looking for.
and i too thought i saw the black smoke in the first ep, but i guess it wasnt it. |

according to the producers:
"The original appearance of the Monster in "Pilot, Part 1" was a 'mindf *ck' , and changed how the viewers and characters perceived the Island."
so I guess believe whatever you want...but I prefer to believe the facts |

| The smoke monster was never seen in the first episode. Why do I think that? Because the dead squid in my freezer says so. |

they didnt even know what the monster was in the pilot. Terry Oquin, running around rescuing everyone, didnt even know that his character was in a wheelchair prior to the crash.
they hadnt designed it yet, so how could they possibly put him into the show?
as a matter of interest, can you see the black smoke or smudge or whatever it is when nikki is blue screened into the pilot?
although it cant be the monster, it does move around like the monster and its split into three just like in "Left behind" |

When planes crash, there is smoke because stuff is on fire, clearly seen in the pilot, so any reasonable person would say that black smoke in the air in the first episode is not the monster whose appearance is far too dense (more like a cloud)but the smoke rising from the plane crash.
Besides, we know that Abrams and Lindelof don't like to give too much away in a single episode and seeing as you HEAR the monster in the pilot episode, this gives more backing to the idea that "Smokey" doesn't otherwise appear. |
