| At the end of every season of Lost I go back through Lostpedia and think about how everything is or isn't fitting together. I have a question about the problem that was set up in seasons 2 and 3, that someone has to keep pushing a button as the island builds up this dangerous quantity of energy that must be discharged, presumably to save the entire race from extinction (according to Mrs. Hawkings). The failure of Locke to press the button necessitated Desmonds actions in turning a failsafe key that, I presume, directed the electromagnetic energy underground, and staved off disaster. Isn't there still a threat from this energy build up though? If there isn't this threat, then why didn't they just seal off the vent this way in the first place instead of having to employ someone to push the button every 108 minutes. Or was this the Dharma Initiatives work for the dole scheme??? Should we still be worried about this electromagnetic energy, or was this all a Macguffin (a Hitch *** ian term for a plot element that everything hinges on, but that turns out to be unexplained or trivial in nature). I think I remembered Lindelof talking about a volcanoe being important in upcoming episodes. |
